New BBQ joint in Columbia, SC
For those Roadies who are in, come to, or pass through Columbia:
We finally went to Gene Daddy's BBQ Shack last night. We will not go back.
Although they serve 3 different kinds of pulled pork (mustard-, tomato-, and vinegar-based), they all taste like bulk frozen - sort of mushy. If they do cook it there, they use no smoke, depending on the sauces to make up the difference. They do have ham skins, so they must have some sort of local connection. They also serve bbqed, baked, and fried chicken - the chicken livers were way over-cooked and the fried chicken rather dry. The rice was good but the hash was not. The corn was very good, the other sides were OK, but nothing to crow over. For those sides that were appropriate, each had a big hambone in them, although they did not taste as if they had been cooked with the bones. The desserts were limited. The banana pudding was good, but had a lot more pudding than bananas (one vanilla wafer and one slice of banana in the bottom of a small cupful).
All-in-all, we felt like not bothering again, since there are many more and better bbq places in this area (excluding the chains).
