New BBQ only place opens in Wkckoff NJ

The Bourbon BBQ restaurant in Wyckoff opened for business on July 1st. I saw a review in the Bergen Record on Friday. Boy am I glad I saw the article. This place is the real McCoy.It is run by Gary Needham who owns the Silver Oak a bistro in Ridgewood NJ. Meat is cooked on an all wood smoker( using only hickory)that can hold 1500 ponds of meat. Menu includes hopped pork shoulder, Texas BBQ brisket, St. Louis ribs, pulled chicken breast, smoked sausage and wings. All the sides are fresh homemade style coleslaw(no mayo), potato salad, beans, collard greens, mac and cheese and fries. Also available are Delta pickles which brine in Kool-Aid. The BBQ sauce sauce is the owners homemade sauce which is also sold at Whole Food. Service is self-service. Bourbon BBQ is located at 529 Goffle Road, Wyckoff NJ. Phone # is 201-4446661. Open 11am to 7pm daily. website is: Bourbon BBQ.com. By the way I thought this was better than Big W's in Pawling NY which the NY Times raved about.

I don't care how good it is. I want Clixie's back. That place was there for 50+ years, and everytime I visited NJ I could order the exact same thing that I got in HS (30 years ago). Hamburger "all the way" on a hard role.... I now live in Texas, where BBQ is a way of life. NJ should not be trying to copy, but cling to what makes it unique.

VWGTO: We have more than enough burger and dog places in NJ. I hope that Bourbon BBQ has great success and last as long as Clixie's. I have been to clixie's but would not make a special trip across Bergen County( I live in Tenafly) to eat as I would to eat at Bourbon BBQ.

Mrs. Sodawater and I ate at Hocutts in Wheeling WV(Glen Dale) on Saturday. Will post our observations on our return home this weekend.

Sounds good....guess I'll have to take a trip up to Wyckoff/Ridgewood soon. The BBQ place sounds good, plus the Star Ledger "munchmobile" team just reviewed a kabob place over on Maple Ave in Ridgewood (in the Fri. July 13th paper)

The BBQ munchies hit again last night. Didn't feel like schleping into NYC fo Dinosaur BBQ. We returned to BOurbon BBQ. Still as good as the first time we visited. I had the brisket sandwich and my wife had the pulled pork. BBQ munchies more than satisfied.

I haven't been to Bourbon BBQ, but there were very mixed reviews over on Egullet. Those who seem to have been to a lot of BBQ joints didn't give it as good a review as others. The owner has also posted. I didn't like his sarcastic attitude towards one poster who had polite criticism. He told her that there was a Chili's in the area she could go to. That kind of turned me off. I don't eat barbecue often, but a very good one in my area is Front Street Smokehouse in Elizabeth. The brisket and beef ribs are especially good. In fact, everything is very good. I don't think I've ever had a tastier or meatier chili anywhere. The owners are from down south (I don't recall where exactly) and have a wall full of awards that they have won. Definitely worth checking out if you're near Union County.

As good as bourbon BBQ may be, I'd still rather have a hot dog joint there. I'm sorry that I missed Clixes. The one time I took a drive there, it was a Sunday and they were closed. Just like in baseball you can never have too much pitching, in Jersey you can never have too many hot dog joints.

Is it a BBQ joint if the guy bills himself as "Chef Gary"?

I have been there a number of times. The food is pretty good. It is nice to have a BBQ place in N Jersey. The pulled pork is really good/the brisket is spotty-1 time really good/another time dry. The only complaint about this place is the BBQ sauce-(it is horrific)-the worst sauce I ever had-(I was stuck using my Cattlemans sauce from home)-He actually bottles it and sells it!-They make good side dished(jalapeno corn bread, corn on the cob with hot sauce on it,and good baked beans. I do not care for spare ribs (which he uses-so I will not comment on those)-overall I have been back several time,so I like it enough to recommend trying it.

I went to the website with all the pictures. Seems pretty decent but I don't get the pickles in Kool Aid and why does it seem like there's mustard sauce on everything?

i don't notice anything that looks like mustard sauce in the pics, and mustard sauce isn't used on anything at the restaurant as far as i know. not that mustard sauce is a bad thing.

Might just be me, there was on picture of some sliced sausage that looked like it had a yellowish sauce on it. I ate a this roadside BBQ joint in Kingsland Ga right off exit 3 on 95 northcalled Blue's. The ribs were excellent and there was a mustard based sauce on them. That's why I thought it looked familiar. I could eat some of them beans too
