New BBQ place in Waukesha, Wisconsin Thu, 11/16/06 1:15 PM (permalink)
I'm exicited to say I tried a new BBQ place in Waukesha, WI (western suburb of Milwaukee) last night. It is called Great Northern BBQ. I asked the girl at the counter if it was a chain, and she said no, it's independant - so that means it should qualify as roadfood, right?

Anyways here's a quick review.
The place is located a block or so off I-94 on Silvernail Rd. between Cty T and Cty G which is the Pewaukee/Waukesha area. It is located at the end of a strip mall. There are tables inside for sit down meals, and they serve beer & liquor as well. When you walk in it smells really good!

I tried a 2 meat combo of Ribs and Brisket. The ribs were good with and without sauce. You can see the dry rub on the meat and the ribs required some chewing to get the tender meat off the bones (the way I like it ). The brisket had a smoky flavor that was not too overpowering. The meat was tender without gristle, with melted fatty areas. The have several choices of sauce including a north woods cranberry based sauce (didn't try) along with a Sprecher Root beer sauce that was a bit sweet - but was really good when I mixed it with the hot sauce (I think that one is called Fire in the hole).

There are about 6 sides to choose from - the 2 meat combo comes with 2 sides. I tried the Cowboy beans, which were excellent with shreds of smoky meat. The coleslaw had a yellow tint, which I'm assuming might have been a touch of mustard. I'm pretty fussy about coleslaw and this was pretty good, just different than anything I've tried before.

The cost of the 2 meat combo (2 meats + 2 sides and your choice of sauces) was $10.50.

I really enjoyed the food and look forward to stopping in again to try more items on the menu - including the pulled pork, chicken and sausages.

Packerwmn, Upon your recommendation I tried it on Saturday and it was great. I loved the ribs and brisket and I devoured the cheesy corn. I really hope this place does well. Waukesha and the western burbs need to embrace this BBQ so it doesn't suffer the fate that Q did in West Allis and Bayview. Check out my full review on www.eatwisconsin.com

Glad you liked it! I've been back a second time with my husband and was just as happy with everything as the first trip. Fortunately I only live a couple miles away - so it will become a frequent dinner/snack stop.
