New Castle, IN - Thu, 07/9/09 12:01 PM ( #1 )
I'm planning on driving to southern Ohio next month and am considering an overnight stay in Indiana.  Last year it was Crawfordsville and in the past I've almost always stayed near or south of I-74 and I-70, so this time I'm thinking about something a little bit more to the north.  Is anyone here from New Castle or the surrounding area?  If so I'd like to hear reasons to either stay there or avoid it, please.  Thanks!

I grew up in Indianapolis, and my father's family was from Crawfordsville.

I can't think of any reason why you'd want to make a special trip to New Castle.

Equally north, but west of Indianapolis, is Zionsville, which has lots of interesting places to eat and some
historic things to see.

Neither can I, but it's an as-yet-unvisited town along the way and where else am I going to find the Steve Alford All American Inn?  In the past I've stayed in Connersville, Lebanon, and the aforementioned Crawfordsville so I've kind of gotten into the habit of trying to find someplace new and preferably not in a big city.  This is the 11th year I've made the drive and even though it's only once a year taking the same route every time can get a bit boring, although some parts of the trip are by necessity always the same.

I don't know of any food places in New Castle but if you desire you could take Indiana 47 east across and starting from Crawfordsville skirting Indianapolis and stop at the Red Onion in Sheridan and then from there take Indiana 38 over to New Castle.

I grew up in West Lafayette and it is a nice little town just off I-65. Between Chicago and Indy...closer to Indy. Downtown Lafayette is nice and there are a lot of good restrants there as well as on Purdue's campus.

The Parthenon on Chauncey in WL.
Triple X on Salisbury in WL.
Khana Khazana on Northwestern in WL.
The Red Seven on Main St. in Lafayette.
The Black Sparrow also on Main.
The South Street Smokehouse on South St. in Lafayette.

I also support the idea of West Lafayette.  I have found that towns with major colleges typically have a great selection of ethnic restaurants from which to pick.  Plus I like the funky atmosphere found in many campustowns.

Personally I prefer the great selection of coeds.

Lebanon and Dayton - guess I really should've said "southwestern".  If only there was a forum thread about places where I could eat.

The problem with places west of Indy is that they leave me a longer drive the next morning.  I'm usually accompanied by 2 friends but the Indy-based one might not be going this year and the other one lives in eastern IN (Losantville), so if my Wednesday drive gets me to that part of the state it really shortens things on Thursday.

I don't know if you are interested in model airplanes or not, but the largest collection of model airplanes in the US is in Muncie (only 14 miles from Lostantville) at the National Model Aviation Museum:  http://www.modelaircraft.org/museum.aspx

Muncie has 12 motels and Bruner's Family Restaurant that seems to have gotten some good reviews:  http://tiny.cc/FoOSI

If going to Muncie:
Pizza King for BBQ pizza
Burkie's for breaded pork tenderloin
