I graduated from high school in Southwick, MA. My folks live in Westfield and I also did my time in the hilltowns.
I often think about moving to New Hampshire but I've been spoiled by southern food and hot weather.
EmilyParis, we probably know some people in common!

Every year is our year. It's just that no one else knows it.

Using the wanderingjew's logic, if West Haven CT is 76 miles east of New York and is a suburb of NYC, then 3/4 of the state of Rho Dye Lin' is just a suburb of Boston.

That's absolute garbage. I'm from New Haven, and I sure didn't grow up in a suburb of New York.

Honestly, that's closer to the truth than you might expect. I know a LOT of people who take the commuter rail from Providence to Boston five days a week.

It's true. It's been growing since they extended the commuter rail down to Providence (and long before that, South Attleboro) and the dramatic rise in housing costs in Boston over the past decade. Which in turn helps fuel a similar rise here. The SO, for instance, is OFD and takes the train from from Providence to South Station every morning.

Me? From southern RI, for the last 15 years living in various parts of Providence, with short or longer breaks in Chicago, Boston and Western MA.

Actually, that's not true, at least not yet. NYC metro population is over 20 million, while Boston is around 6 million. Obviously a larger population will require larger land mass. Take out a 2004 Rand Mcnally atlas and look at the shaded area surrounding the cities and you'll see what I mean. The Boston Suburbs go as far south as Walpole, although some other Atlases have it as far south as Foxboro.
The Providence Suburbs go as far north as North Attleboro MA. If you visit some of the towns in between such as Plainville, Wrentham, and Mansfield, they are still nice albeit expensive rural communities. They are not yet suburbs.

You're probably right, back in those days New Haven wasn't a suburb of NYC yet, but now it is.

Then why doesn't the speed limit change from 55mph to 65 mph before New Haven???

                          I totally disagree (again).
If you want to say from Fairfield down to the NY border, I don't have a problem with that; but Bridgeport to Branford - no way !

Grew up in CT, lived in Wistah, Amherst and Noho for 13 years. Now living in Oaktown CA. Never thought I was a Yankee until I moved out here. I was wrong. I am a New Englander through and through. I miss it like hell sometimes, most often when I eat an apple. Or corn. Don't get me started on corn. Or tomatoes, even.

As a young SoCal boy being assigned to Ft Devens,MASS was a real change of pace. When I got out of the army I married a local and did my undergrad work at Salem State. That time included a one year internship in the office of the Speaker of the House in Boston. New England was a real education in itself.
I did see a couple of Red Sox games back then with the names...Yaz and Tony C coming back in the memory... but other than the fried Clams and Steamed Lobster I have pretty much cleaned out the files since.

Made the move to Boston about 5 years ago from Atlanta. Might miss southern food, but I love that New England "cult-cha"! (And the Fall is stunning in New England). Now living in Somverville, MA.

Here in the heart of Red Sox Nation, we are all rejoicing today. No matter what else happens, we have vanquished the Evil Empire, and we will NEVER FORGET IT!!! The only thing wrong with all this is the lack of sleep we're all experiencing. But, what the heck, it's all worth it. GO SOX!!!

Oh, I think think most of the nation would be surprised at how redneck-esque much of Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut are.

Are you sure you're not thinking of New Hampshire? That's where I've always thought our rednecks were. (And as a native Texan who comes from only the finest white trash stock, I get to use the R word.)

I am currently on travel in Austin, TX, and just heard someone tonight use the same phrase to decipher whether or not one was a Texan. Must be something in the water -- as I had never heard that phrase before tonight.
