New Orleans (Walking distance from Canal & Tchoupitoulas) Mon, 11/15/10 9:04 AM (permalink)
Going to a meeting from Tues-Friday.  Will not have a car and staying at the Doubletree at Canal & Tchoupitoulas.
Recommendations?  I'm with a group of folks that will PROBABLY try to steer us towards well known and probably lame locations.  I'd like to offer an alternative.  Thanks in advance.

Bon Ton serves classic creole cuisine for lunch or dinner.  Domenica is in The Roosevelt Hotel and serves fine Italian style cuisine.  On Monday/Friday they have half price pizza and drinks from 3/6.  Luke is also near and has a 3/6 half price happy hour.  American Sector is in the WWII  DDay Museum.  August is a block from your hotel and serves a $20.00 3 course prix fixe lunch Monday/Friday.  Emeril's is not far from your hotel on Tchoupitoulas.  Feast is a new restaurant open for lunch or dinner.  Herbsaint is near and serves outstanding cuisine.  Cochon is fine dining nearby.  Palace Cafe is a fine dining restaurant just across Canal from your hotel.  Cuvee is a fine dining restaurant in the St. James Hotel. Cochon Butcher has outstanding sandwices.  Lucy's is a fun joint for cold drinks and bar food.  Commerce is a nice joint for lunch. Le Foret is a nice fine dining place for dinner.

I'll second Mother's.  Excellent down home cafeteria food, highly representative of classic Cajun and Creole cooking with good atmosphere and plenty of first rate people watching.

Was just there, will fourth Mother's and say don't forget to check what days Central Grocery is open.  Also had a great po'boy at Acme Oyster Bar, and was pleasantly surprised by the barbecue shrimp at Deanie's.  If I'd been in a cab riding mood I'd have gone to Cochon, and was curious about Stanley! and Stella!

Too many tourists at Mother's.  Go to Elizabeth's in Marigny or Surrey's in LGD.  Go to Trolley Stop Cafe for good inexpensive breakfast. Stanley is excellent but expensive.  Stanley is owned by Scott Boswell who also owns Stella.  Both restaurants are very expensive.  Go to Johnny's in the FQ for po boy's.  Parkway is the best. You can take the Canal Street Streetcar to Jefferson Davis and get off then walk 3 blocks to Parkway.  It's open on Sunday too.  Mena's palace has very reasonable food for breakfast or lunch.  Central Grocery is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Ah, New Orleans, my second home.  I suggest Tommy's Fine Cuisine on Tchop.  Not a long walk and tourists do not know about it.  Great classic New Orelans cuisine.  Also Cochon is great.  I little bit longer walk but worth it.  If you are looking for LA seafood though Cochon is probably not the best place as it is a shrine to the pig.  Finally Stanley is a great place for a good New Orleans Sunday Brunch.  Here are pics from my breakfast at Stanley last week.

                      Eggs Stanley (I think)

The Eggs Stanley looks great, but I would go with the Breaux Bridge Benedict.  That pair would beat a full house

                          Galatoire's.  New Orleans classic.
Enjoyed NOLA.  Heard great things about Emeril's.

If you're on Canal, you can take the streetcar anywhere for a buck and a quarter, so walking's not too big of an issue.
Pascal's Manale is off of Canal.
                                I second Cochon/Cochon's The Butcher
Do not go to the Trolley Stop. Stop in at hole-in-the-wall Please-U, just down the street. But, if you're going to be taking the St. Charles streetcar to Please-U, just keep going until you get to Camellia Grill. That's a MUST-DO.
Also on Canal is The Palace Cafe...classic and timeless.

If you take the streetcar all the way down to the river (not that far to walk, but you can do the streetcar, too), go to #1 Poydras....Poppy's Time Out Sports Bar and Grill serves up excellent hamburgers and one of the best hot (yes, hot!) Muffulettas I've ever had. They have Abita on tap. It's for people that don't want to be too adventurous, but there are great things on the menu, too, like the Muffuletta and also deep-fried Alligator Sausage (fabulous!). Also at #1 Poydras, in the hotel, is Drago's, home of the famous Charbroiled Oysters. Worth a stop in. It's not as cool as the original locale in Fat City, but it's still good.

Littleman - Surrey's is no longer at that locale. They've moved further up Magazine in the old Fuel Cafe location.

The Eggs Stanley looks great, but I would go with the Breaux Bridge Benedict.  That pair would beat a full house

My girlfriend actually told me not to post that picture for that reason.  I told her no one would notice.  Oops.

BTW...an all-day pass for the streetcar is 5 dollars.
You can also buy a three day Visipass from your hotel (usually...if you can't, they know where you can), that is good on all streetcars and busses.

Oh, and I'm seconding Johnny's Po'Boys. And spring for the cab to Parkway Bakery & Tavern in Mid-City.

Mothers is a must try tourists or not. I have been a plenty of times. Great pictures on the wall of famous tourists. I crave the Ferdi Po'Boy! I have had it for breakfast.
X1 is right on about the Charbroiled Oysters at Drago's they are amazing! The Hilton location does not have the character of the Metarie original restaurant. The Charbroiled oysters are outstanding at both locations. Served with Leidenheimer's bread for mopping up the juices.

There are a few places that you have to eat in before you die, and MOTHER'S is one of them.  If your colleagues don't want to go, go yourself.  Also, you must try a Muffaletta Sandwich at the Central Grocery.  Check out reviews on the Roadfood site.
                                            Enjoy!

                                                Walking distance, folks.

Although, they have some great cabs in NOLA.

What defines "walking distance" for you?

Pascal's Manale is off of Canal.

Pascal's Manale is on Napoleon St, we walked the 2 blocks from the St Charles street car stop. The street cars are great, many places within a short walk off St Charles.

What defines "walking distance" for you?

                                                      To my car.

You'll have a tough time in the French Quarter, unless you don't mind having your car towed.  Even if you keep the meter well fed, finding a space directly in front of wherever it is that you'd like to eat or drink is highly unlikely.  My recommendation, given your definition of "walking distance", is to stay in Marina del Ray.

Rio Mar 800 S. Peters St.,

Cafe Giovanni  for dinner (opera singers Wed-Sat), 1 block off Canal St. at 117 DeCatur St. and though out of the way, but well worth it - Antoines's has a 3-course lunch special 20.10 and .25 martinis and Cosmopolitans.  It's our oldest restaurant and really fine dining, though casual dress at lunch.

I was just referring to the fact that SteveinAthens who started this topic specifcally titled this topic:

New Orleans (Walking distance from Canal & Tchoupitoulas)

Okay.  Well, your original "walking distance" comment came right after a bunch of people recommended Mother's, implying that it is beyond walking distance.  SteveinAthens said his hotel is at the corner of Canal & Tchoupitoulas (The Doubletree is actually closer to Common & Tchoupitoulas).  Mother's is at the corner of Poydras & Tchoupitoulas, about two blocks from the hotel.  I'm not sure how much closer you can get without actually being in the hotel.
