New Que Contender?

What can RF-ers tell me about Dicky's Bar-B-Q? Apparently it's a small chain that is growing from out of Texas originally? It has recently opened in our area. Just wondered if it's worth a try? Their website looks pretty interesting.

I don't know where you would get the idea that they are a small chain. They claim themselves to be the largest chain of barbecue restaurants. I believe they are now in almost all 50 states and have upwards of 300 stores.

I dined there when they were a much smaller chain - maybe 10 years ago. I was taken to one of their Dallas-area restaurants by a local whose recommendations I no longer consider. If I were grading their food on a report card, it would come in at a solid D-. I am glad that I gave "Texas barbecue" another shot after trying this.

I've "passed" their locations all over the place.

    That was a clue.

Edited because I thought my last sentence sounded off.

I grew up on Dickey's barbecue. I don't like it as much as I used to; I'm not sure whether Dickey's has changed or my tastes have changed.

I've found Dickey's varying widely by location. The locations I used to go to twenty-five years ago are still pretty good; the newer have been so-so at best in my visits to Dallas. (And the location in the DFW airport has been dreadful.)

Ralph, I saw this tweet from, arguably, the most respected authority on Texas barbecue, and thought of this thread.

As I replied to him, I am flying to Texas this weekend and Dickey's is not on my agenda. :)

I had the misfortune to be stranded at DFW due to a cancelled flight and decided to have lunch at Dickey's. Talk about one of life's poor choices. Bland tasteless brisket, not the merest sight of a smoke ring, crumbly meally tasting sausage and thrown togather slaw. This stuff is so bad you can't cover it with sauce.Plus you get counter personnel with attitude. Now they've opened one up where I live and I will be avoiding that one as well.

Dickey's isn't a "contender" for anything besides subpar bbq. One opened up in my town (an old town that is Q savvy) and lasted about three months.

I'll give them a try but my NEW Favorite is Rudy's, also from TX. Their Brisket is OUTSTANDING!

I live one mile from the original Dickey's. I stopped eating there many, many years ago because their BBQ, like the their franchised chain restaurants is HORRIBLE!

It's right "down there" with Sonny's.
But, at least at Sonny's you can smell smoke.

If it's the same one I am thinking of, they opened 3 or four restaurants here in Orange County a few years ago. I know a few closed up, one within 6 months and another in less than a year. All the OC ones are gone now. They have ones in L.A. and other parts of CA, but I never see anything written about them. I do remember that their reviews were not too good.

Dickey's is in the Twin Cities now all over. I haven't tried them yet. We have another very mini BBQ chain out of Texas in Baker's Ribs in the Twin Cities, and they are pretty good.

There was a Dickey's close to my hotel in Austin (Round Rock).  I went there several times and I always got the wet brisket.  It was not great but it was better than average.  A little BBQ there and a doughnut at Round Rock doughnuts.

After that I was ready for the rack.

Believe me Paul, I am NOT trying to be snarky but, with all the great BBQ in and around Austin you ate at, Dickey's?

I did not know Baker's Ribs had expanded or possibly franchised out of Dallas. Their BBQ is actually pretty damn good (in Dallas). As a matter of fact, Baker's Ribs had been my long time go to place for BBQ in Dallas until recently when we've had a few places open up that are much better.

As with sex, BBQ - constantly dwelling on "the best I ever had" (or the best I ever read about/heard of) - diminishes unnecessarily the enjoyment of that which is before you.

Both Rudy's and Dickey's serve perfectly acceptable protein made with whole meats and some really decent sides.  I enjoy Dickey's pulled pork which I order "unsauced" and add my own Scott's (Eastern Carolina) 'Cue Sauce.  If I sat there wistfully thinking about Wilber's of Goldsboro, NC while eating at Dickey's, my enjoyment would be greatly diminished -- and it would be my own damned fault!  And, I really enjoy Rudy's ribs.

So, compare a meal at your neighborhood Rudy's or Dickey's with your actual alternatives:  other fast food or fast casual franchises.  Looking at "it" from that perspective will definitely enhance your enjoyment.

And, I think that most of Dickey's and Rudy's clientele do look at them from such a perspective.  And, truth be known, a family with kids probably gets "more bang for the buck" at Dickey's than they would from most any other franchise.

I'm sorry, Jim but, I wouldn't go near a Dickey's BBQ unless they were the only BBQ in Dallas.
Thank goodness we have Pecan Lodge and The Slow Bone in Dallas.
And to a lesser degree, Bakers Ribs. Their Greenville Avenue location only!

But, many Dickey's are in areas where they are the only BBQ and thus they perform the same "service" that Sonny's does in many places in Florida.

There are two Dickey's in McKinney and both do well - again, mostly as "family places" in this extremely fecund area.  Our relatively new Rudy's in Allen also does quite well.

BTW:  did you see that McKinney's Hutchins' BBQ made the "top 50"?  http://www.hutchinsbbq.net/ .

    Railhead and Angelo's are better.

Better yet are Franklin's, Snow's, and Luling City Market.

And, IMHO, Wilber Shirley is The King of All Barbecue!

And Peter Luger's is sooooo much better than Outback.

But - just as I enjoy Outback without my mind cluttered and poisoned by the fact that they are not as good as Luger's, Bern's, Harris', or The Prime Rib - I also enjoy that which I order to be before me at Rudy's, Dickey's, and Red, Hot & Blue.

With the exception of two horrid meals I had at the Tony Roma's in Scottsdale and Grand Cayman, the "worst" BBQ I ever had was still pretty damn good!

Oh, we had a Tony Roma's in Columbus about 20 years ago. It lasted for about 18 months. It was really awful. It was located at the end of a strip shopping center and there was no place for anything around it that could produce smoke.

Jim, happy for you that you have a top rated BBQ in Mckinney now.

I feel bad for the people who live in areas where Dickey's or Sonny Bryan's are the only BBQ available.

And, I have heard good things abut Rudy's.
