One of these just opened in the area.
I can finally get half sour pickles!
But only with a sandwich.
They offer an 6 and 12" wheat or white sub roll...

I tried the Big Cranberry....
Turkey on Italian sub roll with whipped cream cheese and cranberry sauce.
Decent....)-the combo just appealed to me.
I also tried the Little Havana Cubano. Comes on Foccacia Bread, and then pressed like a panini...
Blah... Who puts lettuce, tomato and mayo on a Cuban?
Not me..Nor should anyone....The bread was good though.
Rather get a Cuban from Publix. Oh.... no Publix Supermarkets here!
I will be trying other sandwiches.
I see they offer giant corned beef and pastrami.. big enough for 2 at a cost of $15 buckaroos..
I think they say its about a pound of meat...
Which I see is not on the website menu either......
Here is a link to the menu....
Wifi hot spot, Seattles best coffee.... Its close to the College, so it probably will get a good crowd once school starts again.
It was packed the day I went, I think due to a favorable write up in the local newspaper....

    Two questions:

    1. At your local franchise, who is the manufacturer of the luncheon meats and of the cheeses?
    2. I see from the menu that they stock a large number of meats and condiments to make sandwiches. However, some of the combinations seem decidedly Un-NYC. How amenable are they to making a sandwich to ingredients of your own choosing?

I see there is one in Garden City, Nassau County, Long Island, about 30 road miles east of Manhattan. I'm going to see how close they come to Manhattan delis.

I am sure they would mix and match.. I got the Cuban with no L/T/M on it...But you do bring up an interesting point.
Their assembling line is in view.. they make the food right in front of you, like Firehouse Subs do, and to order, so I am sure they would "make it your way"......
I also think that they have regional items for certain market areas...I will ask who their purveyors are, as I do want to try another sandwich.....The Bronx Bomber and the Wrap with Apple Butter has piqued my curiosity...
Will report back the next time I go.. Might not be till next week due to my schedule...

Looks like the sort of chain that would call the capicolla "Cappy-cola".

Since I was on the Island yesterday, I made a short detour to Garden City to see what the sandwiches at the New York, NY Fresh Deli were like. The place was out of business! The shop was on a avenue where every second store was a restaurant or lunch joint. Many on the block were only open for lunch. There was a Quiznos directly across the street. This area reminded me of the area around MetLife's headquarters at 23rd Street and Park Avenue South in Manhattan. You see food shops opening and closing there all the time. With all the competition, some just can't make it.

The shops in this area all seemed to use Boar's Head or Thumann's luncheon meats. The Garden City Deli (a Boar's Head shop) seemed to be thriving. This particular NYNYFD put up their own web site (that is still up), and their menu indicated they used Boar's Head meats and cheeses:
          http://www.ilovenygourmet.com/lunch.html
They also indicated they sold Hebrew National frankfurters.

The franchise's sign was still on the building. However, one would have no idea this was a franchise, since there are places all over the country that say "New York Deli" or similar wordings on them. From the online menu, this place sounded like a typical New York deli, and was certainly authentic.

About half-sour pickles, they are popular in the Northeast. A company I first learned about because I see their brightly-painted trucks around town is Sunshine Fresh, Inc. of Totowa, NJ and Las Vegas, NV. They are the nation's largest producer of fresh (cold pack) pickles, and sell to the food service industry. Boars Head distributors also sell their own brand "Hans Jurgen" pickles. Many supermarket deli departments that sell Boards Head meats also sell the Hans Jurgen pickles. I don't know why the NYNYFD does not sell side orders of pickles. "Real" NY delis can be cajoled to sell a side order of pickles in addition to the spear they give you for free with your sandwich.

Many years ago when I worked in Far Rockaway the deli's put bowls of pickles and peppers on the tables. The East Side Deli in Margate, FL, still put a bowl of pickles and a plate of home made rye bread on the table the last time I was there. It's been a couple of years, wonder if they still do?

Wolfies used to put a trio of items on the table.
In fact, many restaurants in Miami and Miami Beach did the same thing. Half Sours, Slaw and something else..
Been way too many years to remember...
One thing I do miss about Miami is the REAL Jewish Deli's, and Italian Deli's.....

sooooooo---- I Went back awhile ago, and got the "Pound" corned beef sandwich. $15.00.
They advertise it for 2 people, and I figured I could get several sandwiches out of it.
First of all, they rye bread they use S**k's.....
They dont dress it, as you can see in the photos.
Horseradish and deli mustard are on the side.. but I did get 2 complete half sours...
But it is the closest thing to a NY deli here near me..
I wont get the corned beef again, though, but will get my favorite, which is shaved turkey with cranberry sauce and whipped cream cheese on a wheat sub roll. The big Cranberry.

This is how is looked before I tore it apart.

Oh, and I did ask who their purveyor of their meats were, and they wouldnt be specific, but said a local supplier. Which can mean anything..

                  Hi Roossy,

I feel your pain, mostly because I have a three pound loaf of Pechter's restaurant rye bread in my freezer that I bought at Pechter's outlet store on Jersey Street in Harrison, NJ.

The New York, NY Fresh Deli chain sounds like a franchise without a supply line. You can buy good deli pastrami from SYSCO. It sounded like they used good rather than fatty or gristly deli corned beef. But if their rye bread is not good, it means they are not even buying frozen dough or par baked bread and doing a bake-away in the store. This also means that patrons in different parts of the country will have a different experience, depending upon who the foodservice distributor is.

I guess it is a matter of trying various menu items, and keeping a list of the winners. So, I think the translation of New York, NY Fresh Deli is "caveat emptor".

And as far as NY NY Deli???..
                    Buyer beware FOR SURE!....
At least the half sours are always good.
I will go back.. the 2 times I have had the Big Cranberry, it's been good.

I visited a chain deli today for lunch and ordered a pastrami on rye. I had asked for it with mustard only and received that plus lettuce and tomato. (Who does that?) Not hard to pull the offending vegetables off, but the meat was like an Arby's sandwich. My fault, I should have known better. There is no real good deli food in this part of the country.

Looking forward to my trip to NYC Saturday and perhaps I can make it up to myself.
