New York pizza Delivered By Air

I know of several pizzarias in New York and on Long Island that advertise on the net that they will deliver their pizzas by air. Has anyone tried it? Is it good, or is it similar to a frozen pizza?

I tried one of the pizzas when I lived in New York and it was not one of the better New York pizzas. Now they deliver by air -next day delivery. At certain moments, I am tempted to try it.

If they're advertising to people in Iowa over the net, chances are New Yorkers aren't buying their pizza.

I can't think of a decent pizza place in NYC that will ship.

So much of the NYC experience is the crust. And, either they're cooking it and shipping it (which would give you leftovers), or you're cooking. Unless you have a huge coal-burning brick over in your house, you're out of luck.

If you're the Chairman of the Board, I'm sure the White House would deliver by air.

actually, the rumor isn't true. Per the owner of Sally's (Tony Consiglio)...
if Frank Sinatra was in New York he sometimes would have his "driver go to New Haven and pick up a few pizzas from Sally's...

At Famous Ray's Pizza on 6th Avenue and 11th Street, they still have reprints of newspaper articles from the time when some hungry exchange students came back from London, took the pizzas back to JFK, and sold it for about five bucks a slice (1978 or so dollars) when they got back to England. Perhaps not quite what you're looking for, but it's nice to know that it can be done.

In 1958, I believe, Sally's shipped apizza to Sinatra at the Fountainbleu Hotel on Miami Beach. I had some of it.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm... Pizza... Shop Owners, TAKE NOTE! I will be glad to sample your pizza and let rest of the readers know if was worthy being shipped by air! Ok, it was a cheap shot at getting some NY Style food here in Michigan... A couple years ago my brother and I where searching the web when he came up with the idea of searching for "Air Delivered" pizza... Turned up some place in Germany that will deliver a pizza via Helicopter to your house for a small fee... Found it odd, but yet intresting!

Years ago my girlfriend moved to California and was dying for NY pizza. I froze a couple pies and overnighted them to her.

To get back to the second question posed by Peppertree, I think what you get is a third kind of pizza, not fresh-from-the-pizzaria pizza, not frozen pizza, but next-day-air-pizza.

We get the same thing here in some unscroupulous slice joints. Unsold pies are refrigerated and sold the next day.

In either case, the crust suffers. However, the taste of the sauce and cheese and any toppings may be preferable to what is available locally or frozen.

As has been discussed on this forum, there are plenty of good New York style pizza joints scattered around the country, though probably not as many as when Lisanti Foods was still in business delivering supplies all over the place. It may be better to take the money that you would pay for shipping and drive to a fresh pizzaria.

Modern Appizza will vacuum seal a whole pie. All you need is some friend in the are who will pick it up and mail it to you. I live near there and could do it if you need a friend and have the money for shipping and handling.
I got two of these pies and they were flown inside my suitcase all the way to California.

Unfortunately, all the places that DO ship have been mediocre. Flyingpizza.com uses some strange cheese not mozzerella which is probably why they can ship it and you won't die. Eddie's, which is the same company, can be found frozen in larger supermarkets and is just ok. Being from NY, it's no substitute for the real thing.

Sad, but true....I miss the real thing.
