New York to Cleveland .. I-80 Thu, 10/28/04 4:09 PM (permalink)
Hi all,

I'm going from New York to Cleveland via I-80, and wondered if there were any good places to stop for food along the way? Preferably not too far off the highway.

Tom's kitchen in Conyngham PA near the i80/i81 interchange is a nice mid trip stop over. They have big breakfasts, and I believe their lunch menu was good too. It's also an excellent place to try the locally unique breakfast treat Scrapple.

The 44 Diner at exit 44 and the Buckhorn Restaurant at Bloomsburg, and the Clarion Clipper, all right off I-80 in Pennsylvania.

If you are going to be around PA 115 and 80 (White Haven) around dinner time, Take 115 north. At the stop sign, maybe a half mile, go straight; careful, cross traffic doesn't stop. About a mile out of town, on the left, is a little diner called Sitko's Barn.

Ignore it. Instead, bear to the right at the "V" and look for a little run down bar/restaurant called Charlie Weaver's; there's a sign in the crook of the V.

The first couple times we went there it looked so beat up we didn't go in. Now we're regulars. Try Merri's mussels, or Joey's mussels. They're named after friends of mine. That's the kind of place it is; Tommy Alegretto will name menu items after patrons, if it seems like the right thing to do. But, everything is great.

          (570) 443-8513. Closed Tuesdays.

Sorry to say the Clairon Clipper is no more. We looked for it a year or two ago.

Other posters have mentioned Bechtel's Dairy Restaurant in Lewisburg, PA (Rt 15 off I-80), which we try to visit whenever we're driving out that way. Last year we discovered the Gold Eagle Restaurant & Inn in Brookville, PA which I believe is Exit 78 (Int. of Rts. 28-36 & 322). When we're driving a lot, I really like motel/restaurant combos. You don't have to get back in the car when you're tired, AND you can partake of some much-needed cocktails. The Gold Eagle Inn is a nice no-frills motel, and you can walk down to the restaurant and bar. They specialize in prime rib, and the meals come with salad and, between courses, a "palate cleanser" of lime sherbet. Somebody's getting fancy! You can enjoy its charm at www.goldeagleinn.com

Probably a little late, but a must stop for me...even in the cold weather...is the Penn State Creamery.

This is where a lot of people who make good ice cream learned how to make good ice cream! A bit of a detour off I-80, but not too bad.

Does anybody know what the hotdog stand shown in the open of some Drew Carey Show episodes is? I am guessing it is a viable stop.

Lion's Den at Knox exit (PA 338) if it is still there. Very nice steak/seafood place in middle of nowhere. Also like the Iron Bridge Inn south of Mercer, PA on US 19, about 8 miles South of I-80.

Agree with prior note about Gold Eagle Inn in Brookville - good food as well.

Thanks. I googled those. Here's a bonus: There's a hilarious menu item on the Iron Bridge's a sister website for a restaurant called Rachel's--

                        "New York Style Pretzels
Jumbo size pretzel deep-fried and topped with kosher salt. Served with your choice of mustard, nacho cheese or hot fudge.
                        single 1.95 basket 4.95"!!!!!

                        Oy!

Just looked up "Lion's Den" but I think you might have recalled the wrong animal? I found the Wolf's Den Restaurant & Bed and Breakfast, 291 Timber Wolf Run, Just off Interstate 80 Exit 53 (old exit 7) Phone: (814)797-1105] www.wolfsden.com
