New business - Consession Trailer Wed, 04/9/08 5:05 PM (permalink)
Hi! I am glad to have found this site! I am thinking about starting a new business and am hoping that I can get some helpful advise here. I want to buy a consession trailer and am thinking about selling hot food however I am unsure what kind of locations would be available to me to do this. I am located in Calgary and would like to have this unit operational as much as possible in order to make a living. There is a lot of construction going on right now and think that this may be a viable market but am not entirely sure...Can anyone offer any advise on how to do some market research for such a venture or some options for locations? Also, I would want to operate to -15C so the trailer that the trailer gets full usage year round, therefore it will need to be heated - any advise here as well would be helpful. Actually ANY advise regarding buying a consession trailer would be greatly appreciated ...(especially the gotchas :)
TIA

I've got a 24-footer that's been in operation for three, going on four years. It was made by Trailer Tech in Florida.

If you have a flat-top and a charbroiler, I bet it will stay warm enough.

Make sure you have enough generator; 75kw should do it. Inverter types are nice and quiet; that will become an issue so I recommend getting one up front.

Think about what kind of operation you will run and try to do a sensible layout; there will not be much room in there and space cannot be wasted. A cover for your triple sink to be used as a work surface is a good idea.

Talk to the health departments involved before you get too far along. If possible, go and take a look at other trailers in operation.

      Thanks for the advise Kinsman,
I was planning on getting a heater installed, however that is what I kind of thought as well. Can I ask do you do this year round? What are some good location ideas? Are you able to make a decent or better than decent living doing this? I am really relying on the fact that I am an excellent chef in order to make this fly...I am trying to get some real answers as I am considering selling my house to do this!! (FYI, This is a great opportunity - I have a home that 2 years ago was worth 1/2 as much as it is today so I view this as a great chance to pursue this dream - Also I have great skills to rely on if I ended up needing to go back to work so employment is no concern)
