New hot food item Fri, 08/27/10 11:12 AM (permalink)
I cut into a fresh tomato a few minutes ago to make a BLT. I see a bunch of white wormy looking critters. YECK! Upon further examination it turns out to be tomato sprouts.

The seeds had sprouted while still sealed in the tomato. So now I have the next great hot food item, tomato sprouts. Better for you than bean sprouts :)

I've been cutting into fresh tomatoes for 40+ years, this was a 1st.

    FLASH!

Tomato sprouts have just be recalled by the government as a result of two truckloads of them having been found to be contaiminated with e-coli bacteria.

I really hope that one or (preferably) both of you are kidding.

      > For fresh(?) tomatoes to have seeds sprouting inside, I would think that they would have to be way past their prime or have been kept in storage for a very long time.

      > Almost all of the cases of E. coli that have been associated with tomatoes have been connected with rotten tomatoes.

I think Michael is pulling our tomato.

I have eaten a tomato that had those sprouts and it was not rotten. I don't think it was anyway.

It would seam that tomato sprouts would be to hard to grow.

Perhaps you would like to ponder on a somewhat related tomato version which occurred on a tomato plant grown in Galesburg, about 50 miles west of Peoria: a strawmato.  Yes there is a picture of it!

Just look at what happened w/ baby corn.

I am watching a Discovery Channel show, as I'm posting, about turning chickens into dinos. Soooo... finding a way to grow tomato sprouts may not be so far flung?

FoodB, I have bought many a bag of peeled baby carrots but I just thought they were carrots that were picked early... unlike baby corn.

Hmm, could there someday be a ban on eating baby veggies? It DOES sound cruel!

It sounds even worse when you find out that most baby carrots in your supermarket are really "manufactured" carrots: http://www.carrotmuseum.co.uk/babycarrot.html

                                              6star, great link about carrots!

Tha carrots I buy don't have that pointed ends like a true baby carrot. I just use them in stews.

Now I wana try some of those pointed end carrots. I will use those to ??? do something besides use in stews.

Thought the statistics from the site you posted were interesting:
Watch a video of how the process works and how baby carrots are "made".
Some Statistics:  In the US over 172 million tonnes of carrots are processed into baby peeled carrots.  In the US baby peeled carrots sales exceed US$400 million per annum.  Overall carrot consumption in the US has increased by 33% through the introduction of baby peeled carrots.  In the US annual consumer spending on baby peeled carrots exceeds US$2.00 per head.  In 1999 baby peeled carrot purchases passed whole carrots. 94% of US consumers purchased baby peeled carrots  90% had  bought whole carrots. Purchases of baby peeled carrots were even ahead of fresh salad mixes.  Baby peeled carrots have the lion's share of the carrot category accounting for over 80% of all retail carrot sales.  Up until 2000 baby carrots have dominated US produce department's with excellent growth ahead of all other produce items.

The baby carrots they sell in bags here in Texas, that I have bought, are just small regular carrots, that have been pealed. They look nothing like the baby carrots in 6star's post.

I think there are 2 kindsa baby carrots. The fake ones and tha real ones.

And now there are the shredded ones - which I'm guilty of buying to put in salads -

Baileys, do you mean peeled baby carrots? I just thought those were peeled adult carrots I see at the store.

Lets face it, peeling whole carrots is a pain and that is why many folks buy already peeled, or shredded, carrots.

About those "manufactured" carrots? I was not able to watch the vid.

Thanks FoodB. It took awhile to download on my old pc but I watched it. No suprise that those are not true baby carrots. Just slender peeled and cut regular carrots.

Ok, back to baby corn. Oh, no this is about tomato sprouts!

No - these carrots are not baby carrots - these are not really shredded - they're more like mini julienned and they're dry and great  in salads.
