New to Here - Awesome Site Sat, 01/28/12 8:17 AM (permalink)
I am new to this site but have been researching the Hot Dog Cart business for sometime.  As luck (bad) would have it, I lost my job in December and now am going to start slinging for a living VERY soon. I hope my questions are not too stupid or repeats. I have looked through the site and sometimes it seems I need a fresher answer to my questions than what I have found. Please bear with me

First question (of many) - I am looking to start by mid March. Should I go new or used or "built by me" ? I have seen a few on Craigslist that are within driving distance. And if I go used can you give a few points on a cart that I should look at most carefully.

There are alot of you out here with tons of experience and I would like to tap into that !!!

More questions to come! LOL

I think the quainter "built by me" can be a plus.  Still, this is not an easy chore to accomplish.  I am assisting in the design and construction of a food truck.  It is a serious undertaking.  So, wanna get in quick and easy, purchase used or new.  The same facets of purchasing anything used vs new apply to this field as it does to any purchase.

Welcome both of you to Roadfood!  It IS an awesome site and there are plenty of friendly and knowledgeable folks here.  I personally can't help you but there are lots of professional hot dog vendors here that can.  Again, welcome!

        • Dont do anything as far as a cart without talking to your local health dept. first. Ask them your options and what is required.

yeah, what RJT said.  local health department will tell you what you have to have.  i dont know about NY, but in OK you have to have 4 sinks, 10 gallon freshwater, yadda yadda.   i would think that if they (used carts) are near you, they are built to spec.  i think used would be the best bet; if they are cheap enough.

Can a cart made out of wood and screws really hold up to a couple years of daily hauling back and forth over bumps and potholes? I just can't imagine it could, at least not on our crappy roads in Michigan.
