I'm taking a trip to Newfoundland, most of the time around St John's, the capital this summer. Wondering if anyone has been there, or lives there, and could recommend some eateries.

I've been there--along about 1963. I remember having a great time, but I don't remember what I ate or where. Sorry

Here are a couple of quick sources of Newfoundland information:

www.chowhound.com/main.html -- Do both "Powered by Google" and "Classic" searches for "Newfoundland" food related posts then go to the general Canada board and post a request for information.

www.virtualtourist.com/f/535/ -- This is a direct link to the website's Newfoundland/Labrador message board.

Oh yes, I have enjoyed them many times. I did not see your original post so will get out my notes and give you suggestions. I have been to Newfounland at least 10 times and it is a wonderful place with the nicest, most sincere and fun people that you will ever meet.

One thing you must do is to go to the Battery Hotel and have a bowl of fish chowder or an appetizer and just sit there and look out at one of the most wonderful views you will ever see..........the harbor and the entrance to the harbor. It is truly enchanting and if you are fortunate, you will even see icebergs at or just beyond the harbor entrance.

I wish that you were going to explore other areas of this wonderful island but you will have a real adventure and a wonderful time even if you just do the St. John's area!

Katie, old buddy, old pal, old friend of mine... Tell me more about your Newfoundland experiences, the music, food, etc. Why have you been so fortunate to go there 10 times? I hope to spend 10 days there, and right now I'm doing my research to see where I want to go. I do want to see more than just St John's, but with limited time I want to make a good pick. Right now, just thinking of eastern half of the island, saving the west for another trip.

There are lots and lots of restaurants in St. John's. I am not sure if you are looking for upscale or strictly Roadfood here. Whenever I have gone to St. John's, it has been after a few weeks in the "outports" so have always been into finer dining there as 90 percent of the restaurants in the rest of the province are Roadfood!

Nautical Nellie's has great fresh seafood...........moderate.
O Reilley's Irish Newfoundland Pub has really good pub food and Irish music . This is a very fun place to go and the midweek price specials are terrific.

For real Newfoundland food offerings go to Velma's Restaurant.

All three of these places are right on Water Street or Duckworth and are very moderately priced.

Being a huge fan of Great Big Sea, and celtic music in general, I've already decided I'd spend a little time at Erin's Cafe on water Street, and that area in general.
My food tastes are pretty eclectic and not real hard to please. I always want to get the local flavor wherever I go.
                Could you recommend any lodging?

I have hesitated about asking about what cod tongues and cheeks were due to appearing somewhat backward and from East Tennessee but I confess that I would sincerely like to know. Cod is one of my favorite white fishes from the Atlantic but please help me on the tongue and cheeks.

Both these things are just what they sound like. The tongues are the tougues of cod and the cheeks are 2 morsels that come out of the head of the cod. I have only had them fried and loved them. The cheeks have a real soft texture which some may not care for but both are very sweet, and in my opinion, very good.

Newfoundland have a quite a few foods that are much different than what we would ever see here. Some restaurants serve seal flipper pie or baked seal flipper and "fish and brewis" is very popular. They have two wonderful berries there which are partridge berries and bakeapples. The bakeapples are really wonderful; taste similar to a cloudberry.

Paul,I haven't had the tongue's but the 'cheeks' are quite delicious. Look at a picture of a good sized cod and you'll see the cheeks on the bottom of the head(not under the eyes as you might expect)appearing as if the poor guy had partially swallowed a marble(sorry for the bizarre fish anatomy lesson)......I,like you, love Cod,try to get a hold of a few and fillet the meat out or have the fishmonger do it, well worth the effort.

Now that the topic has switched to cod tongues ... you can get a right tasty Cod Tongue Dinner (6 to 8 pieces of cod tongue, rolled in flour and fried, along with home cut fries or mashed potatoes and coleslaw) for $7.25 at the Eastern Passage, 30 Melanie Drive in Brampton, Ontario.

                            http://www.eastpass.homestead.com

Melanie Drive runs off of Steeles Avenue East (southside) between Baramalea and Torbram roads, about a mile or so northeast of Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

This seems to be the prime Newfie hangout in the GTA.

Part of the reason people eat them is that long ago, the cod caught were much bigger and hence their cheeks and tongues were bigger too. They are more of a delicacy today, methinks.

I watched the movie "Shipping News" over the weekend. Fantastic movie with an all-star cast, and filmed in Newfoundland ( a big part of it anyway, some in Nova Scotia) The movie is well done but the Newfoundland setting adds another dimension to it. It's a movie of character development, not action, so it won't appeal to everyone. I want to read the book next.

You can find his album entitled "Good Though!" and it's explained there.
