I was out shopping yesterday, running late, and realized I was not going to get back home before getting light headed. The shopping center I was in had a Pizza Hut, with an ad for "The Natural" in the window. I had not read anything about this pizza other than what was in this thread. I just wanted to try their pepperoni Natural to see how it compared to their regular pepperoni pizzas. Except for the whole wheat-type crust taste, it tasted about the same as I remember them being a year ago, which is probably the last time I ate at Pizza Hut.
I would like to perform this taste test again buying both a plain cheese Natural and a plain cheese Hand Tossed pizza, same time, same place. I am not sure the cheese I got is the new one or the existing "pizza cheese" they use on pizzas other than the natural. Under pepperoni, the cheese tasted just like the cheese as I remember being for the last few years.
After checking the nutrition information on PH's web site, and reading various Pizza Hut press releases over the last year, I have come to the conclusion the switch to all natural did not mean a switch to gourmet. The only thing apparently unique to The Natural is that it uses a five grain crust rather than a just-wheat crust, and a different cheese. PH's web site indicates they use cheddar cheese as well as mozzarella cheese on these pizzas. The use of the term "all natural" seems to be used in the same way as in consumer groceries, e.g. 7-Up now calls itself all-natural, HFCS and all. Sausage, pepperoni, sauce, etc. are the same as in the rest of the product line. Some of these PH ingredients may have been all natural for years, for all I know. Since ingredients are distributed directly to restaurants and many are frozen, they can get away without using preservatives, especially since the heat in the pizza oven will kill any nasties present.
The nationally-advertised price of $9.99 is for a 1-topping medium (12"), the only size it comes in.
One thing I noticed is that I did not get any heartburn from this pepperoni pizza. Once in a while, I get a craving for their Thin Crust pepperoni pizza. So, I will still patronize PH. But if you are familiar with PH already, don't bother trying the new pizza solely on the strength of the carefully-parsed words of the press release or the television commercial.
