So do you think that the right one was picked? Can anybody remember any other winner except Guy?

Who cares? The Food Network has nothing to do with cooking. There was an excellent article in the NY Times magazine yesterday about how the Food Network admits they gear their shows to an audience who likes to eat, but does not want to cook. They run a few "dump & stir" shows in the daytime geared toward stay at home parents. Cooking isn't a sport. No one watches the Food Network to learn how to cook anymore than they watch the NFL channel to learn how to play football. It works for us - my wife hates to cook, but loves to watch the Food Network and asks me to make what she thinks look good. So I find a recipe and make it, and everybody's happy.

I happen to enjoy the food network, and have used several recipes downloaded from their site after watching a particular show. I find it great as a "home cook" with no training to get new ideas on foods and/or preparations - I don't expect it to be a cooking school. I do also enjoy the "dining" type shows, and find many of the shows to be very entertaining. Back to the subject at hand - they had an interesting group on this year's show - many of whom I disliked after the first week, thankfully they went quickly. I'm happy with the winner, but would have been ok with either of them, and would have at least given their new show a try. It wouldn't surprise me if Jeffrey shows up somewhere in the near future on the network. Adam from last year gets more air time than the winner does.

From the first episode, I had Jeffrey pegged as the winner. I agree that they might give him a show, anyway. One thing that nobody mentioned about his clip in the last episode, which annoyed the hell out of me. He spent his entire demo talking about the use of "harissa", but except for spiciness and color, he gave no indication whatsoever of what the hell it was, how it tasted, how it was spelled, or how you could obtain some of your own. I looked up: north african condiment : on google, and found it pretty quickly; it's hot pepper (cayenne, I assume, the recipes I saw didn't specify), caraway, coriander, garlic, and olive oil.

I'm rapidly losing interest in Food Network. Iron Chef, a rare Good Eats, DDD's. Just about everything else I surf past anymore.

Although we have hundreds of channels to choose from, I still gravitate back to FN and HGTV - because that's what interests me. I didn't watch hardly any of the competition - it's much like all these other reality shows that we forget all too quickly - who won what and when and so on. My memory fades, but who other than Guy and Big Daddy are still on FN?

I was a fan of Adam Gertler (sp) last season. He lost to Big Daddy and got his own show called "will work for food". I use lower case letters cause it sucks! He acts like a confused idiot. He had some real potential and it has been tossed to the side. I like the show idea, but the execution is garbage. PS I will be auditioning again for the Food Network Star again this year, wish me luck!

I had Jeffery as the winner in the first few shows. Mellissa improved a lot along the way I think because she listened to their critiques and took the judges advise instead of feeling she was being attacked. Their concept shows were not that new or ground breaking, there are other shows with basically the same concept as Jeffery and Mellissa seamed like a 30 Min. Meal show. I did however like them the best. I was just glad to see the little fat chick go, she got on my nerves from the very first show. Guy Fieri and Aaron McCargo are the only ones of the winners who are still on tv. I guess it is all a matter of personality. joe

I think both Melissa and Jeffrey will find a place on FN in the future. My main gripe with this season was keeping Debbie on as long as they did. They constantly showed that the judges had access to what was going on in the kitchen so I assume they knew what a back stabber she was. That's OK on Top Chef as the winner does not have to "win over" and audience(only through their stomachs). I also watch FN less and less but I do have my favorites(Iron Chef and Alton). I will give Melissa's show a try.

The major thing I dislike in Food Network is the cakes. To me, that's not about food; it's about construction with fragile materials. I, for one, like to see people try something and succeed far more than I like to see them try and fail. Otherwise, Food Network is what I watch when there's nothing else on (well, if you call it "watching"; background is more like it). But the cake shows I find to be VERY annoying.
