The oldest family-owned restaurant in Kansas City has closed its doors after 85 years of business.

    Keith,

Have they actually closed at this point or is there a target date in the near future? The article is vague on this point. I'll be in town next week for The American Royal; maybe I could get in for one last lunch.

Buddy, it's pretty clear to me, the place is closed.

Are you going to the AR BBQ contest, Buddy?

Damn! I had wanted to eat there to try it when I was over in Kansas City, but always ended going somewhere else. Oh well.

            Keith,

As the Co-Chairman of the American Royal Barbecue Sauce Store, you can bet yer bottom dollar I will be there both Friday and Saturday (and Thursday for that matter, for the the set up of the store). In fact, I posted both in the BBQ Forum and on my ongoing Roadhouse Bar-B-Que Sauce Summer Tour 2006 thread over in the Miscellaneous-Food Related Forum, requesting volunteers to work at the store.

We will get you free admittance to the Royal both days regardless of how many hours you work at the store (that's an $8-$10 savings per day right there), you will get first crack at the hundreds of Barbecue Sauces that will be donated by manufacturers from all over the country, and, for lunch, you will be fed with all the championship 'Que you can eat at the volunteers tent (plentiful leftovers from the hundreds of contestants that will attend this year).

It's a pretty sweet deal if you're going to be at the Royal anyway, or if you just want to be more involved with the event.

            Lemme know if you're interested,

            Buddy

P.S. This offer is extended to all you KC Roadfooders, and anyone else who is planning to attend this year's American Royal, October 6th & 7th.

            B.

Thanks, Buddy, but I will be in St Louis that weekend.

For those of you that haven't been there, the Royal is a lot of fun. Particularly on Friday night. While they BBQ, the teams have parties - many with live bands.

I used to be a Governor of the Royal, and was going to get involved with the BBQ contest. I took the judging training with the Kansas City BBQ Society and volunteered to judge, figuring that would give me an overview before deciding where to volunteer to work the following year.

But they never used me. That was a few years ago.
