Not a Superdawg virgin anymore!

Hi All - I finally did it. I drove down to Superdawg (Chicago) from Milwaukee and ate one of the best hotdogs I've had in a while. I also sampled their Tamale, which the counterhelp referred to as a "tube." The thing comes wrapped in a paper pouch instead of the traditional corn husk. It was not the real thing, but interesting nonetheless. The Superdawg came in a box with something that I've not seen before ... a picked green tomato. Can anyone shed light on this thing? I've downloaded pics to the restaurant review ... they're in limbo until somebody approves them for the website. Can the powers that be (Stephen?) tell me if there's something else I need to do? Yours in Roadfood, Yumbo

I love Superdawg. Haven't been to any of the east coast havens, or west coast, but I have been to a few of the Chicago ones.... Superdawg wins hands down for me. I, too, have wondered what that green thing is. I asked once, was told what it was, and can't remember now.

A delayed flight at Midway turned out to be a great thing, as I stumbled across Superdawg's stand near gate B16. It was my first full dressed Chicago style dawg...it was great...and now I can say I understand. Looking at these well adorned dogs in pictures doesn't begin to give you an idea how great they are. I should also post this to the "airport food" thread...as it is the best airport treat I have had...maybe ever!

Oh my, our little yumbo isn't a child anymore! Welcome to the full grown adult world of Chicago Hot Dogs! You are correct in stating that Superdawg is the only place around, at least in my 47 years experience of eating Chicago Hot Dogs, that serves the pickled green tomato. They used to be quite common, at least around Chicago, in the pickle section of your local grocery stores. For some reason I've always associated them with Polish and or other eastern European food customs. I've got to believe, given Milwaukee's and Chicago's similar ethnic diversities, that you would be able to find them up your way too. Just a little P.S. to all you Milwaukeeans and Chicagoans who cross paths on your way to each others cities: Instead of taking I-294, try taking Hwy. 41 between the north suburbs and the Wisconsin state line. There's an excellent sit down burger place up that way called The Shanty. This is full service, not fast food. They start you off with a crock of Merkt's (or some comparable brand) cheese and a basket of bread sticks. The wonderful pub style burgers are available with the same cheese. This is good solid Roadfood in a very warm welcoming atmosphere.

Superdawg is one of th best places. You should hit up the Vienna Beef factory store next time too. *Drools* everything fresh from their factory, SOOOO good. hmm...maybe I will walk my butt down the road and have that for lunch today.
