Not really a trip, more of an Outing Report

I'll follow buffetbuster's lead and post a report I hadn't planned to try out the new forum software.

Pie Diva and I went to Durm (that's Durham, NC for the Yankees in the room) on July 3. The clouds seen in the photo above are the outer bands of Hurricane Arthur. More on the weather later.

Bobbi & I spent the July 4th weekend at our place in NC. Looking for something to do, I asked if she wanted to see the Durham Bulls play the Gwinnett Braves on July 3. She answered with a question, "Are we going to Dame's Chicken & Waffles?" There is only one answer to that question.

We had first tried to eat at Dame's last October when buffetbuster and Mariton were in town, but I made the rookie mistake of not making a reservation. We have since learned that lesson on a visit before a previous Bulls game. Dame's was a very short walk from the parking structure at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Our prior experience with chicken & waffles was at Lo-Lo's in Phoenix. We think Dame's is much better. What really blew our minds is that Dame's is listed on a Gear Patrol Top 25 list that includes Chez Panisse, Sanford and many other famous high end restaurants. Gear Patrol wrote:

"Durham, North Carolina was recently elected one of the “South’s Tastiest Towns” by Southern Living magazine. Though it has many great restaurants, the centrally located Dame’s takes the cake — er, waffle — for their twist on regional comfort food. Sure, chicken and waffles have been a staple of Southern-inspired food for decades, but here the big portions of buttermilk-soaked fried chicken amount to some of the crispiest bird we’ve ever bit into. Paired with the golden waffles and a “schmear” of flavored whipped butter (we like maple pecan), Dame’s signature dish brings comfort food into the realm of idolatry. Each order also comes with two sides, and while it should go without saying, we suggest you skip the fresh fruit and go straight for the grits and triple-cheese macaroni."

    Here's Bobbi's chicken and waffles.

The chicken is extremely crisp with fantastic spices. Her order included a butter "schmear" for her sweet potato waffle. I, being a big spender, sprung $1.25 extra for real maple syrup. She ordered greens for her side.

She was ranked #1 in the "Most Memorable Woman in a Sports Movie".
While I don't agree with her personal views, you gotta admit she was hot in that movie!

Congrats on your new found position as a double chili cheeseburger!  Does that mean we will have to pay more attention to your posts?

You are still on the naughty list for cruelly showing us what we missed at Dame's.  Any chance you will submit a review for the place?

She was hotter in Atlantic City - the role that made her a 'star'.

Fbm & MJ - Ms. Sarandon may have had her day, but the only way she's getting a man's attention now is to land on his foot with her walker. <rimshot>

The shrimp and grits at Dame's were the best I have ever eaten. The shrimp were not too spicy, but were flavorful and nicely cooked. The grits were incredibly creamy with a layer of cheese melted into them. This is an outstanding dish.

The prices at Dame's are very reasonable. Our two meals, a beer, an ice tea, and Bobbi's maple syrup came to about $30 before tip. Unfortunately, no pies are offered at Dame's, so we left without dessert.

After that meal, we decided to take up smoking and went straight for Lucky Strikes.

Actually, that's Durham's American Tobacco Historic District where we went for beverages before the start of the game. Choosing a beer at Tyler's Taproom was a tough decision.

    Fifty.

    Count 'em.

Fifty beers - ALL craft brews. Too many to fit in one photo. Unable to choose, I went with a Belgian beer flight.

I ease-dropped as patrons made their orders and got samples of some other beers while we sat at the bar. Bobbi spotted fresh Pork Rinds on the menu for just $3.50. It took a while for them to be cooked (we think they couldn't catch the pig), but once they arrived the rinds were spectacular.

You won't find pork rinds like this at your gas station.

When I purchased the tickets I didn't think about the weather. Thunderstorms were in the 5-day forecast and remained until the day of the game. There was also Hurricane Arthur with a bulls-eye on the outer banks for early Friday. Fortunately for us, the hurricane bought in cooler, dryer air and eliminated the threat of storms. It was really quite comfortable at game time.

I, the big spender, went for "best available" seats and we ended up here. It put me back $40 for the 2 seats.

Not the front row, but row 3 was fine with me. The game was enjoyable and my Bulls came back from an early deficit to defeat the Braves 5 to 3.

Following the game was the Bulls fireworks spectacular, their biggest show of the year. A great ending to a fun night.

When she found out that Dame's didn't have pie, Bobbi thought the restaurant needed it. She asked the server what his favorite was and said she'd bake him a pie next time. He was a nice young man.

Raleigh-Durham.  One of my favorite places in NC.  Always a great place for food selection.  Our Glee club get together was in Raleigh-Durham a few years ago.  Did not know about Dames then.  I wish we had though.

I just found info on the beer flight. They were Belgian style, but some were domestic.

My favorite was Fullsteam Lemuria from right here in Durham. A strong ale wuth addition of vanilla, cocoa and roasted banana.

I also enjoyed a glass of Sierra Nevada Raincheck Spiced Stout after trying a sample. It is brewed in Asheville.
