Not-so-fancy food in Edenton, NC Sun, 07/9/06 9:20 PM (permalink)
My husband and I stopped in historic Edenton, NC today and ate at a place that made me think of Roadfood. I found and registered for your site just to tell you about it. Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place, but I'm not familiar with the site. The restaurant is called "That Fancy Cafe", which is more clever than it sounds because it's associated with (and essentially IN, which is kind of fun) an antique store called "Fancy That." The food is anything but fancy. We only got a plate of sides and a dessert, but they were all REALLY good, including two-bean chili, green bean casserole, scalloped potatoes and corn pudding. The corn bread that came with it was the best I've ever had in my life - moist and not too sweet. Their desserts are all (maybe 4 or 5 choices) homemade. We had the peanut butter pie, which was really runny and scrumptious. I overheard the owner/cook telling a local customer that she had to hire someone to manage the place and people asked her why she didn't hire someone to cook instead; she said that's the part she really likes (which shows). The decor is also sort of interesting, with art for sale on the walls, and the antiques all around! So, I think you should check it out some time. I wish I could post a proper review with photos, but we went through on a road trip of our own, so won't be back for a while. I would love to go back, though, as Edenton has LOTS of historic sites for such a small town.

Edenton is a totally cool place. A bit out of the way, but a really fun diversion. The town has lots of atmosphere, as does the whole area. I was just there with a friend who is looking to buy a bed and breakfast in town and got to check a few places. Don't recall the names, but will make a note to remember next time. Not too far from the road between Raleigh and the Outer Banks.
