Now very learly of raw oysters Sun, 08/30/09 6:45 PM (permalink)
I used to enjoy an occasional dozen oysters but a few weeks ago I read about some horrific disease a guy got from eating raw oysters somewhere in the panhandle of Florida. Don't remember all the details but the oysters gave the guy some kind of infection that caused him to lose some or all his limbs IIRC. This has stuck in my mind to the point that I don't believe I'll ever eat raw oysters again. Am I over reacting?

    Hi,
I just took my Fl. Food manager test, there are a few different types of poisionings from the shellfish from diferent waters

Neurotoxin shellfish poisioning ( that is the illness )
Brevetoxin (is the toxin it produces)
it comes from contaminated water, cannot be smelled or taseted as is not klled by cooking or freezing
and mostly comes from the warmer seas , the Gulf of Mexico Caribbean Sea

    Paralytic shellfish poisioning
    Saxiton
    same thing
found on New England and Pacifc
    same as above,
    can cause death

    Amnestic shellfish poisioning
    Domoic Acis
    Pacific Nw. Canada

The best prevention is buyibg from reputable suppliers

I also learned NEVER ever give a child under the age of 4 a raw oyster...they cannot fight off any of these..

These diseases have been areound forever, water testing is done to prevent..stay with the old wives tale, dont eat raw oysters in the summer months or only eat them in months with an R...the bacteria grows in warmth,,,

Gosh, I guess this scary stuff will keep me off oysters for the rest of today - but tomorrow , I suspect, will be back to my bad old habits - like enjoying the good things in life.

      Cheers, John
