OK tornado's

We in Tennessee are some what fortunate as we are less prone to disasters such as fire, earthquakes, tornado's and hurricanes.  I had a tornado hit my residence about 8 years ago and took out 21 trees and did lotsa damage but nothing even coming close to what has happened in OK the last couple of days.  Incredible damage and there is bound to be lots of people hurt or perhaps killed.

I know the situation is severe, and hopefully only injuries are reported.

I have always found it funny that the National Weather Service (located in Moore, OK)  is a TARGET for tornados.

I was in Greensburg, pre-tornado and then again about 6 mnths after the tornado.  It is amazing what Mother Nature can do.

I am amazed that there were not more fatalities at the school.  It pancaked the elementary school.  " />" />

What I find really sad were the innocent kids who were killed in their school.  This was not the first tornado to hit the town, and I realize that building "safe rooms" are expensive, but it should be a requirement that before you are able to build your home in a town with frequent tornadoes that you be assessed a fee for building and maintainence of such a room for each school in the town.

Was listening to a report today about how expensive shelters are. Well, hello shelter industry, how about designing something new and affordable. Also heard about group shelters, neighborhood shelters... come on, lets get creative and save lives instead of building giant brick houses that go down like a matchbox.

Some friends in Indiana bought the lot next to theirs.  They're going to buy one of those large storage lockers and bury it in the yard.  They're going to outfit it so that it's a livable shelter.

I guess starting with four walls and a ceiling is better than having nothing.

The other day I passed through my mother's hometown of West Liberty KY for the first time since the March 2, 2012 tornado that totally leveled the town's business district. There are quite a few new structures, some completed and others under construction, but there's still plenty of empty lots where stores and other businesses used to stand. It'll probably be another decade or so before West Liberty truly recovers from this disaster.

It was nice to see both Carrie Underwood and basketball star Kevin Durant donate one million dollars each for the tornado relief.

It's a nice thought....but as we all know..Once you let the gov't decide what you MUST buy and MUST build...it tends to get out of hand........and Glory oskey.........guess what....those funds seem to get siphoned off for something else!

On a separate thought.............I've heard that empty containers are stacking up in shipyards all over the US.maybe true..maybe not.  Seems like some clever construction guy could convert these to safe rooms that could be at a core of or near things like schools, hospitals, churches, municipal bldgs., etc.  Maybe even homes ( if outta sight)
