I was saddened by the news too.

Once in college I drove from Anderson, Indiana to Philly just for a Pat's cheesesteak wit.

I got several for the ride back too

      a legend has truly passed

Pat's was my first Philly cheesesteak experience as a college student in the mid-eighties. It couldn't have been a better one.

Here's an appreciation from today's Washington Post. You might have to register.

            http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/21/AR2006072101622.html

The legend of Pat's will only grow now, as the story is told and re-told. Already in one day the price that the first steak was sold for has gone from a nickel in the Philadelphia obit to a quarter in the above column. I guess the author read the Philly piece too quickly and after stating that the cost of the steak grilled up by Harry and Pat was 7 cents, instead of the actual 7 cents per pound, she thought they surely would have sold it for more than they paid, so she liberally took the 25 cents price that was also mentioned in the article, but that was the price of a sandwich years later.

              Mandalay:
Those words could have been written by me, almost word for word. But as I've stated elsewhere, I did find the lunch truck on the north side of the Penn Campus near Samson Street to have a very good version of cheesesteak. It was close to the law school. I think the whole are has been redone since I was there in the mid eighties.

The only time I eat Cheez Whiz is on a cheesesteak. Other types of cheese just don't ... um ... cut it.
