Ohio Easter Weekend - sorry no pics Fri, 03/28/08 2:51 PM (permalink)
DH and I went to visit his family in Marietta OH last weekend. His Mom has recently moved into a nursing home and we thought we ought to visit sooner than later.

We stayed at the Lafayette with a view of the (very high!) Ohio River. We ate breakfast there in the Gun Room twice. They do a breakfast buffet, but we could have ordered off the menu Sunday. I kinda wish I had. Although I really liked how they cooked everything Sat. AM, the eggs we wierd - grainy in texture. Terry said when his mom would cook them with milk they turned out this way. The gravey for the biscuits was thinner. Little things that added up to "not worth it".

We had a better breakfast at a place called "Cafenated" down Front St. Scrambled eggs (very soft scramble) with ham, green onions and cream cheese. Yummy! These same folks own a place called the Galley which we are going to try next time. Apparently it's been there for years, but these folks have recently bought it and spifted it up.

Most of the main meals were with his family - typical Easter Dinner -ham, two kinds of potatoes, green beans (yuk!), salad, etc. and leftovers on the day after.

We should not have been hungry enough after those meals, but each night, kinda late, we went over to Maritta Brewing Company. We give thumbs up to the burgers and fries here. Also the homemade root beer. And so-so hand waggles to the fried fish (of the "Fish&Chips) and the onion rings.

    Williamsburger-
Thanks for the report! I spent one afternoon in Marietta and liked it enough to want to come back. It is a nice little area and The Lafayette looks like a classic old hotel. If the Marietta Brewing Company makes their own root beer, I will make a point to eat there, too. Thanks for the tips!

The Lafayette is a terrific hotel, and last time I stayed there the corned beef hash they served in the Gun Room was fantastic -- made there and crusty.
