Kelly Kazek has put up a great article on old timey general stores across Alabama. A few of them sell foods and edible sundries, nearly all of them make incredible photo opps.

We lost our general store on Main Street in Ellicott City, MD (actually two stores, a market and a hardware store right next to each other, owned by the same family) a couple of years ago after they had been there in some fashion or another for over 100 years. Now they are a sterile Williams-Sonoma clone and a antiques boutique, respectively. Sad times.

I grew up going to Bargo General Store in Gray, Kentucky. My grandfather would take me there and give me a quarter so I could get a bag of candy. It's long since shuttered but the old structure is still intact. It makes a great photo.

Pie Diva and I are staying in Saluda, NC this weekend. One of our reasons for going is to visit the M.A. Pace General Store which has been there since 1899. Definitely worth the trip.

Near Lebanon, Ky there is an old (est. mid 1800s) general store called Penn's. Lots of info out there on this old store that a good strong wind could probably knock over.
