Now, Sweet's that was a fabulous place. Right in the midle of the Fulton Fish market long before the area was 'Gentrified'; kinda like Durgin Park in Boston before Quincey market became the tourist destination it is today. Sweet's lasted till the 90's and would only be open when the fish market was. That's to say it would close on weekends when the tourist hordes would come. Not the recipe for success. I have very fond memories of going there with dad.

Yeah... Sweet's upstairs and Sloppy Louie's around the corner at street level. Fond memories.

Back in the late '40 my union hiring hall was located on Beaver Street, and when I was there looking for a ship I'd frequently take a walk at lunchtime over to the market area and get a sandwich at Sloppy Louie's. Thank's for bringing it up- I'd forgotten all about the place. I don't know why, but Sweet's just does not ring a bell - must be a place I never was aware of...

    Cheers, John

As far as St. Louis is concerned, I certainly don't have an authoritative answer. However, here are a few that I know of. All are in their original locations.

      1875 Carondelet Bakery http://www.carondeletbakery.com/history.htm
      1913 Crown Candy Kitchen http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=297
1916 Bevo Mill (Beautiful building built by the Busch family, however it's on its last legs as a restaurant)
1927 Bissinger's (Bissinger's traces their family candy making history back to the 1600s when Karl Bissinger was the "confiseur imperial" in France) http://www.bissingers.com/aboutus/history.php
      1931 Ted Drewes http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=296
      1938 Dad's Cookie Company http://www.dadscookies.com/history.htm

In Wellsville, NY is "the Texas Hot" family owned since 1921. They supposedly invented texas hot sauce on hot dogs and serve thousands every week. We stop in probably 5 days a week.

Their home made onion rings and pies are out of this world.

As a side note, John Rigas (owner founder of Adelphia communications) was literally born over the store, his family owned and still owns the Hot, and until very recently he was seen in the cafe most saturdays or sunday mornings

In Mountain Top, the Alberdeen Inn was a colonial b&b, at least reputedly so. I know that the Knotty Pine has been family owned in Hazleton for over 70 years.

Here in downtown Chicago, I'd venture to guess The Berghoff is the oldest. It opened in 1898.

Couple of older rerstaurants can think of are Golden Lamb in Lebanon, OH and Boone Tavern in Berea, KY. Both excellent establishments.

I'm thinking that the 2 oldest places around here might be Olga's Diner and http://www.carriagehousevoorhees.com. I believe the Olga's in its present location in Marlton was built in 1949. The Carriage House is 52 years old. That's in my township. I recommend the Carriage House (I call it "the restaurant that time forgot". I do not recommend Olga's. It's just a well-known landmark when you give directions. I honestly don't think there's anything older than that, standing, around this immediate area. Being as I'm not originally from here, I never really cared enough to investigate. Sad, but that's the 'burbs for ya.
