Omaha Steaks Sat, 12/25/10 6:44 PM (permalink)
I couldn't find a thread dedicated to Omaha Steaks so here I go:

My Vegan friend sent me an Omaha Steaks package for Christmas.  I thought it was fitting.

It is an assortment of steaks, pork chops, hot dogs, stuffed sole, chicken breasts, twice baked stuffed potatoes and a box of German sounding knives made in China.

We cooked the stuffed potatoes tonight as an accompaniment for steaks already purchased.

Not knowing what was in them, I took only a few bites.  Tasted like they were bacon masquerading as potatoes, maybe with smoked chemicals added.  I could see bits of green onion and a lot of cheddar cheese.

Looking forward to trying the stuffed sole.  It's stuffed with crab meat and scallops.  How could that be bad?

Anyone here familiar with the Omaha Steak products?  What's your take on their steak?

We received a very similar package a few years ago. We enjoyed everything but the stuffed sole, It wasn't that bad but I just didn't care much for it. Those gift packs are pretty reasonably priced but I wouldn't want to pay full price for their products.

we have gotten a number of Omaha steak  packages in the past.
we never tried the stuffed potatoes, but the potatoes augraten (sp) are very good.
the stuffed sole with scallops & crab is also good. we also liked the pepperoni bread.
the steaks aren't bad, portion control cuts 6 to 10 oz. a little small for my liking so I would make 2 for myself.
I don't think the quality or taste is any better than we get at a local meat market.

I hope that I didn't sound ungrateful in my first post. The gift is wonderful.  I just was interested in everyone's comments on Omaha Steaks.

I'm still looking forward to the stuffed sole!

I was given a package of  Omaha Steaks  quite a few years ago and they were inedible due to what we thought was freezer burn. I think they are probably better packaged now-a-days.

Ms. OC and I celebrate Christmas with the family on Christmas Eve.  I was given and Omaha Steaks package.  Last night, Ms. OC and I had a quiet dinner for two.  Tortilla crusted talapia, stuffed baked potatoes and apple carmel tarts all from Omaha Steaks.  We found everything quite good.  We enjoyed it with a nice merlot, which was also a gift.

I've never been very impressed with Omaha Steaks.  You can usually get equal or better steaks from your local butcher, and cheaper than the full priced product.

I think they are very overpriced for very small portions. Plus they are not that great.

I never tried Omaha Steaks.  I just can't see why I would want to order meat by mail when I can get anything I want locally.  But I did check out their website and have to agree with chewingthefat.  Very expensive, and it's not even prime beef.  Even the Private Reserve Steaks are not prime.  They are just labeled grain fed.

I received a gift pack for Christmas last year from Allen Brothers.  It contained 4-NY strips, 2-Colorado lamb loin chops and 2-veal rib chops.  I know the beef was prime and everything was fabulous.  Expertly grilled also Being curious, I checked their website.  The meat was priced slightly less than I would pay in a top notch steakhouse.  Again, I know I could do better locally.

For folks who like to give food gifts, O.S. is a safe alternative, especially as a gift, as Dimmie said.

I'm not sure where to ask this, but does anyone know if any markets sell spare ribs from Sweden?

I used to be able to buy them in 10# boxes from Kroger's in Texas but I haven't seen them in quite a while.

Believe me Bill, I didn't complain at all about the Allen Brothers gift pack I was just commenting about buying them for myself.  Unless of course you are giving me hints about my birthday present?

I've purchased Omaha steaks several times, usually using coupons and special offers.

To the good: they are very well packed. And price/pound notwithstanding, there is something to be said for portion control. The quality is OK enough for the meats.

To the bad: with meat, it really does come down to value. Omaha steaks only represent value when given or received as gifts (for the giver, it makes a nice presentation, and the food is properly cared for and sanitary).

Their hot dogs are outstanding, btw.

I was given a box of mixed goodies from Omaha steaks several years ago, and I guess since I was the recipient, I still get mailings from them.  The meat was fine (nothing to write home about, though).

I got some 50% off offer from them, but when I examined the prices, the per-pound cost was still very high, even considering that the steaks are completely trimmed, and well packaged for the freezer.  I've had some Allen  Brothers steaks that are more expensive, but they are the best of the best, no comparison.

Mosca, The custom cut case at Price Chopper is comparable to the steaks from Omaha.  They will cut and trim to your specifications.  And sale prices apply to the custom cuts also.  Wegmans is also a great choice.

There is also a guy from Old Forge that sells portioned, vacuum packed prime beef to restaurants.  He shows up at our office now and then with his refrigerated truck, but I'm happy with the store selection.
