On-Demand water heater - how big? Mon, 03/14/11 1:28 AM (permalink)
OK all you who have done this already....how big of an LP on-demand water heater do I need for my trailer build? We are setting it up as a full catering mobile kitchen. I know the flow rate of the water will affect temp, so if I'm using a 12v pump (gotta buy that too - wasn't there a recent post?) how how can this water get using one of these fancy new heaters? I don't mind cutting a vent if I need to do that for lotsa heat, so if you folks have some suggestions on various brands or sizes, please tell! I need to order this stuff soon so it's waitng for us when we go pick up our rig.
thanx, Dave

just go on ebay and search out Eccotemp L5 and get the shur-flo water pump as well. It's the one with the white casing on the front of the pump. Works great and Eccotemp actually recommended that pump for their product. Pump = $50   Water heater=$120ish

hi, can't find anything with that name - is the spelling correct? I'm guessing I want a 6 liter water heater, right?
Roger, do those guys have any kind of catalog?

the flame is adjustable for the amount of water pressure, you can tweak it a little to increase or decrease flow rate and btu to get the perfect combination of temp and pressure at the faucet....

personally i would go with an 8L, that way you can absolutely gain maximum pressure and temp easily..... only a few more bucks, and operating cost is negligible due to the fact it only runs when you need it.....

if you go on ebay, you can find stainless units that will have the HD grinning, and they are "plumbed" for external venting to begin with

I've got an L5 on my Cart and I like it for this application.  If I were to go to a larger trailer or truck I would want to step to to more flow, especially with larger 3 comp sinks.  Water temps will get hot enough to scald you.

Thanx guys! since we will have a three-compartment sink with a spray wand, and a handwash sink, I'll do the 8 liter. Thanx for the advice as always.

I'm building a similar size rig and I went with an eccotemp L10 and a shurflo 4088 (3 gpm) both off of amazon dot com after a lot of searching around.  The L10 was basically the biggest capacity I could find for just over $200.  The tankless units get bigger and hotter but the cost goes up quickly.  Eccotemps, or the L10 at least have a sensor that shuts the unit down if it detects a temperature over 150F but it can be disabled easily.

Also, I found a deal on a solar water heater panel that I'm going to use to pre-heat water.  I'll store the pre-heated water in a hot water expansion tank just upstream of the L10.  I'll also use an expansion tank for the cold water side.  These provide a reserve of pressure in the system so the pump will cycle less often and if you need to crank out 6 or 7 gallons one minute, a 3 gpm pump can catch up later.

good call on the expansion tank, i read here somewhere that some HD's want a certain flow rate on top of temp, and an expansion tank fits that bill perfectly, not to mention as you said taking a little "pressure" off the pump to keep up with demand and ease up on cycling

Yeah, our HD also wants pressure, temperature and flow - they tested us at our chocolate shop anyway...i was thinking about an expansion tank also, since almost the entire state of Alaska is on well water and we are all familiar with what happens when you DON'T have a pressure tank!  :)
