I'm afraid that everyone can answer this question with their favorite Q place to eat, but the real answer for you is within your own mind.

Don't go to Memphis. Travel east of Memphis up I-40, take a right somewhere up there (that's what maps are for), and find the small town of Lexington, TN. Search out a place named Hay's Smokehouse, and you'll have found what you're looking for.

Do a search of this site, from real people who know.. Then tell us if it is Memphis or not! Your down in the Mayors neck of the woods, he, along with his followers will tell ya otherwise! (As Bushie noted above)....

There are so many variations of BBQ, you will find it very difficult on this site to get any agreement on what is the best BBQ. I think someone may have already advised you that it really depends on what you personally like. I cannot even begin to list them all but you have options like smoked, pit, many variations of rubs and sauces.

I personally like many of them and you have to realize that most regions have their own style, different cuts of meats and different animals. Kentucky does a lot of mutton, Texas does a lot of beef, Tennessee does a lot of pork, North Carolina does a lot of vinegar based sauces, South Carolina does mustard based sauces, Tennessee cannot make up its mind but tends to be sweet.

There are many experts on this site and I am not one of them but I can share with you that I can enjoy most all of them.

If I had to pick a favorite, I would pick Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, Huntsville and Mobile. They do pit and I really enjoy their ribs and sauce. My favorite smoked would be Hays Smokehouse in Lexington, TN which does whole hog and if I had to pick beef, It would be Kreuz in Lockhart, TX.

Memphis, TN tends to be a hot bed of BBQ places. It sometimes seems that Memphis has a BBQ on every corner. I am not sure why? I reside in East Tennessee namely Knoxville and we ain't got good BBQ. Go figure.

Again, I am not a expert and we have a bunch of them on this site. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Is Jack's the place located right next to (left of) a gas station-convenience store? Just a wood building with some tablesand a walk-up counter, but great pork.

There's another one in that area that's a bit more fancy called "Smokey Joe's." Anyone have any idea exactly where it's located? I'm thinking it's either right over the FL border or the Georgia border.

I agree with Sundancer about Dreamland, best ribs and sauces I've ever had. But then we don't live in the BBQ Belt!

The one I'd like most to try is Hays.

                          wvhillbilly,
jacks has 2 places. the 1st one is exit 2 and is next to a truck stop and has inside seating. think the one you are talking about is exit one (both old numbers but then again so am i) which is a little further south. pork is the same at either one and so are the sides. from what we watched and heard he tends both pits (southern prides heavy on the wood and low on the gas kicker) driving between each location. this dude is good!!! leaves extremely specific directions to the staff and man they follow them!!!!! his sides are great to boot.
we have him on our list coming back from indy. going to hit lexington bbq in NC, maurices piggy park in SC and jacks on our way back to florida. nice part is i can write it of as research for business and with gas costing what it does sure need the help
                          jack
ps. and i know just where the 1st white castle is located in indiana got to have my every 2 year load of sliders

                            Thanks guys !

                            That seems ta be the concensus -- Pork Shoulder > Memphis > "The InterState"/Brisket > Lockhart.TX > "Kruez's Market"

                            Thanks again !
