We arrive late and don't want to drive far--any ideas for a casual roadfood meal? Thanks!

Hmmm...It's been a quite a few years since I lived there but I'm happy to share with you what I remember.

If you're coming in on 17, there is a decent Mexican restaurant at exit 122. Make a left onto E. Main Street and follow that a couple of miles. Should be on your right around Schutt Rd.

If you're driving in on 84, take exit 3 and follow 17M to Dolson Ave. On your left will be a strip mall with two good restaurants -- The Corned Beef Factory for excellent and authentic Jewish Deli and the other (I'm sorry I don't recall the name right now) is a small Italian Food Store/Deli. There's no place to sit down but everything is fresh and homemade. Try their Squash Parmigian -- it's awesome.

On Route 211 -- which is Middletown's "Strip" -- I used to enjoy Cosimo's, which is right off of exit 120 on Route 17. It is right off the highway on the right as you're heading towards Montgomery.

If you're in the city of Middletown, try Tony Boffa's, an Italian restaurant on E. Main Street and Railroad Ave.

There are also any number of Diners in the area. I like the Americana on 211.

Except for the Corned Beef Factory and the Italian Deli, none of these places are going to scale to any culinary heights. Still, any of them are way better than any chain restaurant you may eat in otherwise.

Good luck and enjoy your one night in Middletown!

If youare staying at either the Courtyard/Marriott or Hampton Inn, Tony's is a quick 10-12 minute drive in on East Main Street....

The Americana is....ok I guess...if you will be on the south side of town [staying in New Hampton] The Oasis Diner at the intersection of I84,17M and Rt 6 is a MUCH better choice..or even the Colonial a bit further up into town-the Colonial actually has some decent steaks/chops at reasonable prices [at the Colonial ask for a table serviced by Carmen...LOL]...I seriously doubt the Italian deli will be open when you arrive...it closes fairly early...

Forget that Mexican restaurant El Bandito. Mrbuffer and I paid over $40 for dinner (and we only got quesedillas) and the place was so crowded we couldn't hear ourselves think.

Oasis Diner is a good choice. Try Johnny D's Diner on Rt. 211 for breakfast, they have a buffet on the weekends. Every time I've eaten at the Colonial Diner it's been nasty so we usually don't go there.

For something really quick, there's a deli called 84 Quik Stop on Rt. 17M eastbound. If you go there on a Friday night, ask for Big John (that's my son) and have him make you a Big John Special (Italian combo with the works). Daughter Christine also works there. The salads are homemade and they have a grill and variety of hot foods. (a little plug, but the kids need to pay car loans!)
