Opportunity for Vets at Orlando's Shades of Green Wed, 06/27/07 9:21 PM (permalink)
I know there is a now a separate thread going on concerning Disney. But I think this deserves a separate topic, mainly because this information will age rapidily, as I don't think this offer will last for long. I know we have a lot of veterans on this site.

Shades of Green is a Dept of Defense Armed Forces Recreation Center located on Disney property adjacent to their Magic Kingdom golf courses and across from the Polynesian complex. It is usually only open to Active Duty and retired military, DOD civilians, and a few other categories of people associated with DOD. I got an email from them today where they announced a program called "Salute to Our Veterans Program" that they are opening their eligibility to all honorably discharged veterans for the two months of Sept 07 and Jan 08. You will need to dig out your yellowing DD214 to prove eligibility. I did a quick look at the link below and it appears the rooms range from $111 to $121 per night for Sept and $119 to $129 in Jan and you can reserve three rooms. I don't think they'll have this availability for long though.

A couple of things to consider for any one eligible and interested:

The facility is entirely non-smoking.

The rooms are pretty large, with a standard room having two queen beds and a sitting area, with either a balcony or patio.

While on Disney property, it's not integrated into Disney's computer system, i.e you can charge something in the park to your room.

However, you can have packages delivered to their own room.

They also have their separate bus system that doesn't run quite as frequently, put once connected to a transportation center, you can use Disney's transportation. A lot of people will walk to the Polynesian and get on the monorail there.

You're entitled to the extended hours like other Disney guests.

You can park for free at the parks using your hotel parking tag.

Critical to Roadfood readers, the breakfast buffet at their Garden Gallery is very good and worth the money. As is their room service pizza, for about $10.00

If you're looking for more opinions on this property, suggest you use the Disney fan sites, which have some recent experiences. The property was closed recently (1-2 years ago) for a renovation and expansion. We've stayed there three times and like it very much.
