Oregon to Scottsdale road food rec's? Thu, 10/14/04 2:22 AM (permalink)
We're leaving for a road trip this weekend between Portland OR and Scottsdale AZ. I've listed the route we're taking with highway numbers. My criteria are listed below the route. Any recommendations for don't-miss places to eat are very welcome. Thanks!

OREGON

I-5 south from Portland to Eugene

Hwy 58 south/east from Eugene to where it become Hwy 97 to Klamath Falls

CALIFORNIA:

Hwy 139 from Klamath Falls to Susanville

NEVADA/CALIFORNIA:

Hwy 395 from Susanville, past Reno, Bishop, San Bernadino

Hwy 10 east, near Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs

ARIZONA

Continuing on Hwy 10 east past Indio, Blythe, through Phoenix to Scottsdale, our final destination for this part of the trip.

Then we will be driving around Arizona with the idea of heading north to Sedona and Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, and south east to the Tucson area, and ending up again in Scottsdale.

I'd like to find restaurants/roadside stands, tacquerias, Thai or Vietnamese places - We will be pressed for time on the Portland to Scottsdale portion, so would like to stay on/very near to the highway. On our tour of Arizona we will be poking around and can explore more.

Thanks again!

Well, that's the vacant but beautiful route. You should type in the various locales in the search box and see what comes up. For food purposes, I'd take I-5 to Ca89 at Mount Shasta, and cut east there, as opposed to heading into the void on 139. That's our usual route from southern Oregon to Reno & beyond.

The drive will have been worth it once you get to Scottsdale.

Try to organize yourself at sunset for a visit to Grease Wood Flat for burgers, beer and dust.

It is about 20 miles north of town. It is family friendly. Don't wear your good shoes.

      This IS Road Food.

Is there something special on the menu at this place that makes the drive worthwhile? Besides beer and dust, that is!

        Thanks.

If you don't like beer and dust, why are you going to Arizona?
I lived in Scottsdale before moving to Southern Oregon, so here's what I would go back to see and eat.
Don and Charlie's and the Pink Pony. the Biltmore-walk around the grounds and so forth. Restaurant Mexico in Tempe. Mexican food in Phoenix/Az. is like BBQ in KC. There is no bad, there are just different interpretations of good. Lovejoy's Kc Pit BBQ, at 7th st.and Bell. Real KC Q in the Valley of the Sun.
I'd go to Arcosanti, Prescott,Camp Verde, Jerome, Oatman, Young, and the Saguaro national Monuments. I'd also hit Bisbee, since we never hit it during my time in the desert. We always headed towards the mountains on the weekends, that's why we ended up in the mountains of Southern Oregon.

Thank you for your restaurant recommendations. To answer your question, I'm going to Scottsdale to have surgery at the Mayo Clinic. We will have some time to tour Arizona for the week between the pre-op testing and the surgery itself. I didn't realize drinking beer was a prerequisite for travel.

Don't miss the TexAz Grill in Phoenix. Great chicken fried steak and other down-home specialties.

It's not required, but it is certainly ingrained in the culture.
