Ortega Astroburger? Thu, 11/20/03 11:05 AM (permalink)
Came across the following on a web log. The author was driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles:
quote:
Uneventful drive barring having an Ortega Astroburger at Kramer's 4 Corners. Best hamburgers in the world, in a very odd location.
A bit of web reasearch points to Kramer's Junction, the intersection of Routes 58 and 395 in Barstow, CA, on the edge of Edward's Air Force Base.

I just thought someone here might be interested. A search against the forum didn't turn up any matches.

Good eating!

A bit more from the same source:
    quote:
Four Corners is literally that, a few shops and filling stations at the intersection of Highway 68 (Mojave to Barstow) and Highway 395. It's east of Boron, northeast of Edwards AFB. Astroburgers is a rundown odd looking hamburger stand in art deco a bit north of the intersection and north of the Shell station on the west side of 395, just far enough off 68 that it doesn't get a lot of business. It survives because it still serves great hamburgers including their Ortega Astroburger; arguably one of the best hamburgers in the world, certainly in California. Truck drivers and frequent travelers along the northern route to Las Vegas know about it. So do all Boy Scouts going up 395.

I visited Kramer a few times when I had a plant in Adelanto, CA. It's been 10 years though. We would drive the 70 miles round-trip for a burger. I didn't remember the name "Astroburger", but it was great. Maybe things taste better when you have to drive a long way and the anticipation kicks in. Out there, it's just a neat, boring drive thru the desert with little else to see. I'm glad to hear it's still there.

There was an Astroburger on Melrose Ave in Los Angeles when I was a student in the '70s. I remember the burgers were good and also cheap. It was a good place to chow down for a couple of bucks out of a student's budget.

Is Astroburger a chain or some sort?
