Oswego, NY

Will be in Oswego in late January for a couple of days.  Would very much appreciate any recommendations on where to eat ....

Since there's no replies yet, I'll try to help. I spent an overnight in Oswego last summer, so I only had two meals. One was at King Arthur's Brwewpub, right downtown on Bridge street. It was typical brewpub food, but not bad at all, and the beer was good. It bills itself as a steakhouse, but we only had typical bar food (wings, nachos, burgers) so I can't comment on the steaks.
 
The more roadfood-y place was Rudy's Drive In, a 1950's era drive in "Burgers Fries and Shakes" type joint down by the lake. Excellent, but seasonal. In January it will be covered in about 12 feet of snow.
 
There are chain motels right across the scenic bridge, which at least in Summer was a nice walk after a few hours in the brewpub.
 
 

I did my graduate work at Oswego State over the years 1969-72. I commuted from about 45 miles away to evening classes after teaching all day.  I will never EVER forget the experience of those nightly commutes during the winter. I was a Southern Californian who had never dreamt of winters like those on the lake-front, much less lived thru them.
 
   I am sorry that except for visiting the historic sites, the nuke-power station, and the Nestles Chocolate processing plant in the area, I have no recall of anything other than the Winters, worth mentioning.

Probably wondering why a DC resident would give advice on Oswego, but I grew up in Syracuse (Liverpool) and My mom and dad are both SUNY Oswego grads, two of my three brothers have degrees from Oswego, my nephew was born there, and several of my good friends went to SUNY Oswego. My dad spent his high school years in Oswego - so as a kid, we went up to Oswego often. To the loop after Apple Picking in Mexico, NY, Vona's for dinner, Harborfest in the summer. Plus, visiting friends. I got to know Oswego pretty well.
 
I would've recommended getting a Texas Hot at Rudy's and then Bev's Dairy for a treat - but they won't be open in January.
 
Get a slice at New York Pizzaria. An independent pizzaria - it's a good slice.
 
Oswego Sub Shop - this place makes a great sub. Al Roker once featured this place on the Today Show. And Al knows his food.
 
Vona's Italian Restaurant. An Oswego tradition. I don't know if they updated the decor of this place, but it's old fashioned Italian. Totally Oswego.
 
Stone's Candy Shop. This place has been around forever. Makes all sorts of homemade candies which make a nice take home from Oswego. Not many of these mom and pop candy stores left.
 
 
 
Bridie Manor: An old flour mill converted into a nice restaurant. Food is good, atmosphere is great - along the river. The bar area has a nice happy hour. Lots of couples have wedding receptions or bachelor dinners on the top floor.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

I would also recommend Canale's Italian resturant.

block or so up the street from Vona's.............
