I'm new in the restaurant business. I was wondering how much do you usually invest in a full-featured POS system. Thanks!

Impossible to speculate with out knowing just how full featured you are looking for. Have you used any of the search engines?

It is much like saying I want to buy a car. The devil is in the details. But, so are the answers. what is your definition of "full-featured" restaurant type? seats? have a bar? delivery? take out station? drive thru? how many employees? accept credit cards?

So you plan of using it for food/liquor inventory & order alerts, food/bar order processing, mailing/promotional lists, computerized reservation calender & patron database,tax/payroll accounting, ect. What about time clock feature for payroll (punch in punch out? How big of a restaurant, how many employeees?

I would say the cost would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-5K depending on how many stations (monitors/draws) you will need. I STRESS to my clients that this is most definately a purchase that should always be bought new (not previously owned and/or operated by another restaurant/bar). It is also a major investment, quality customer support/tech service is very important. You can find a deal or a bargain, but this is a system (once implemented)that will serve as your command center, and house not only vital business information, but confidential information. My biggest piece of advice. Do not even consider buying such a system from Ebay, for many reasons, and ALWAYS have a Plan B's if/when you may experience a glitch in the system. Glitchs happen to every system, no matter what. If you do not have emergency plans, your business will be operating in temporary chaos (or not operating).

You are correct. I was going to say 8-10K, but I gave a very conservative figure. New restaurant owners freak out and see the $1,999 models on Ebay, and think "that will due". It gets costly. It is well worth the investment, and there will not only be an initial investment, but on-going costs as well

we have one stand alone Contrex system in my restaurant and it cost 6K. Its a little over-kill but keeps historical data and track of employee time in and out.
