Just about the same things as others keep in their pantries with the addition of assorted vinegars, assorted rices, beans, tomato paste, clam juice, Dijon mustard, canned artichoke hearts canned hearts of palm, Tahine, and tinned anchovies (would prefer those canned in salt but can't find them locally). Also, I like to add different items that I find at Trader Joe's in order to try them and continue to stock them if we like them. Lots of interesting things at Trader Joe's. Donna

(* Source: Penzey's) And this was one of the hardest lists to pare down I've ever made! Rick - are those Turkish bay leaves licorice like? We had lunch at a Vietnamese place today, and had pho with the plate of herbs etc, alongside and one of the leaves had a a very strong licorice smell to it. We asked our server and he said it was "Asian bay leaf" - just wondering if there was any similarity.

Lone Star: What did they look like? My suspicion is that it was holy basil, a very licorice tasting basil, most unlike the European varieties. Here are some photos: http://www.foodsubs.com/HerbsAsian.html

My Russian father-in-law always said, "yob tvoyu mat." You won't find it in the pantry.
