Pardon my rant against CBS

As recently as six years ago A&E covered the Pops goes the Fourth celebration in Boston for the 4th of July and did a great job doing it with three hours of full coverage. Then CBS got a five year deal to replace A&E but did a miserable job by comparison to A&E. The finale of the event is the Boston Pops rendition of the 1812 overture complete with 105mm howitzers. CBS never in five years covered that part. Even with CBS doing the last five, we haven't missed this event in ten years. This year I see that CBS rather not interrupt their 'prime time' lineup to cover this event or any other 4th of July celebration for the national audience. I guess CBS thinks we all need to get our weekly dose of 'Two and a Half Men'. Considering the recent events in Boston, I think CBS is (to quote someone else) ACTING STUPIDLY

lleechef and I are both unhappy that we won't get to enjoy the Boston event on television this year.

WHAT???  I watch the Boston Pops to the 1812 Overture on CBS after coming in from watching our fireworks.  I have for the past several years,

    Look forward to it,

Maybe it's your local CBS programming?

Going to check my listings now...

DARN!  You are right!  Somehow their contract ended or the screwed things up.   Darn again!

    I'll have to watch Macy's.  :(

I don't blame you for ranting!  The grande finale with the 1812 Overture is the best part of the performance!!!  When I lived in Boston I decided to brave the kazillion people and go to the Esplanade to see Pops Goes the Fourth.  Best performance I ever saw.  Us too, we'll have to watch  Macy's.  Boo Hiss.
Columbus did theirs last night.....Red White and BOOM! and it was very good, but not nearly as good as Boston's, especially the part with the cannons!

Well, the "Can't Broadcast worth a Sh.er, System" has joined the ranks of so many once great institutions that seem not to care much about this country and its heritage.  And we used to think the Bob Newhart sketch about advising Lincoln how to re-write the Gettysburg Address was funny.  Today, it might actually be...."Abe, baby, ya gotta narrow it down to 2 sound bites. Keep We the People and By the People.  Blow the For the People!"

Although the 1812 overture has nothing to do with the US, it was Fiedler Masterpiece by a man who also gave Bostonians free concerts on the esplanade every summer.  I was crazy enough to be RIGHT THERE in 1976 when the maestro blew away all of Boston and most of the US with that stirring rendition.  One of my fondest memories ever.  They say we tend to imprint well on bad things (Where were you when JFK got shot?, The Challenger went down?, 9/11, etc).  This is one of the GREAT memories that I will cherish. However, I guess my grandkids will have to see a truncated version on TV

That's why it's wonderful to be in another State and have a front row seat to Macy's fireworks.

I agree Mar. The fireworks seemed good but the music just didn't work for me! I flipped between the fireworks and the Walking Dead Marathon(which was being shown in black and white).

Because of the music, I switched off the NYC fireworks about 1/3 of the way through.

Poor Milwaukee this year-fog rolled in and nothing could be seen. I didn't go to the lakefront, tuned in to a broadcast and the screen was white.......

LOngwood Gardens, once the home of Pierre duPont, does a lovely display on the 3rd of July. To be expected by the family that controlled black powder in the 20th century.  Fortunately, we sit on a hill and I can sit on my patio, drink in hand and watch most of the aerial display, about 3 miles away.  However, the view is better (from indoors) in the winter when the trees on our property are bare
