Paul, I'm sending prayers and wishes for Judy that she has a quick recovery from her bout with pneumonia. My brother was diagnosed with lymphoma last year. I know a little about what your going through.

Paul, I am sorry to hear about this latest set-back for Judy. Chemo can have many bad side effects, and one of the worst is reduced immunity. We are praying for Judy and hope she fights off this pneumonia and regains her strength soon.

I'm not sure if ginger will help right now with Judy being so sick, but for typical chemo nausea side-effects, ginger was recommended to Rose by the staff at Wilmot Cancer Center when she was underging chemo.

Many gracious thoughts to all of you for your good wishes. judi is out of the hospital with her fight with pneumonia. It was tough as she was on intraveneous antibiotics for almost a week.

                                    Chemo is obviously very tough.

She has several more series to go through before her total health can be ascertained.

You BET. The goal of the chemotherapy meds. are to keep cells from dividing, and thus preventing same (cancer) from spreading. Unfortunately drugs are not necessarily targeted at just "bad" cells; hence hair loss. Same results in high risk for another invasive infection via low white cell blood count (as you well know). Still, I have seen complete, 100% recovery from this type of cancer within 24 months. Be sure your spouse follows diet plan from oncology nutritionist. As always, Paul; my prayers continue for your spouse's recovery. If I can help in ANY way, just let me know. You should have my phone number. If not, contact AL or me via E-Mail if needed.

A "personal" ad. Think about becoming an apheresis donor. People going through chemo (as well as other treatments need platelets. The donation process takes time (about two hours), and unlike a whole blood donation, one can donate every few days as platelets replace themselves quickly. (And because as a platelet donor you get to watch a movie while donating, the time goes by fairly quickly). I've included a short note below from the American Red Cross. I hope no one minds the ad - but people in chemo really need the platelets.

                                          ecome a Platelet Donor
By donating your platelets through platelet apheresis (ay-fer-ee-sis), you give a very special gift of life.

Most patients undergoing a bone marrow transplant, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatment or organ transplant need platelets in order to survive. In fact, doctors are finding that platelets play a vital role in more and more new therapies.

With just a five-day storage life, platelet donations are delivered quickly to the patients who need them. Platelet donors have the satisfaction of knowing that their donation will be saving a life within just a few days.

                                          What is Platelet Apheresis?
Until recently, the only way to collect enough platelets for a single transfusion was to take blood donations from 5 to 10 donors, separate the platelets from the other blood cells, and combine the platelets to obtain a large enough quantity for transfusion.

Today, sophisticated medical equipment — blood cell separators — can collect enough platelets for transfusion from a single donor. Using a technique called apheresis, blood is drawn from the donor's vein into an apheresis instrument, which separates the blood into separate portions by centrifugation. By appropriately adjusting the instrument, a selected portion of the blood, such as the platelets, can be recovered, while the rest of the blood is returned to the donor either into the same vein or into a vein in the other arm.

This process takes more time than whole blood donation, but the percentage of platelets is much greater. It is a simple, safe process — very much like regular blood donation. In fact, your body starts replenishing platelets immediately after your donation. Within 48 hours, your body's platelets should be completely replenished.

                                          Why Are Platelets Needed?
Blood is made of four components: platelets, plasma, red blood cells and white blood cells. The platelet component is necessary to control bleeding. Patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, for example, are unable to produce enough platelets. Without platelet transfusion, life-threatening hemorrhages could result.

                                          What's Involved
By using a special method called apheresis, whole blood is separated into components, and the platelets are removed. Specially trained Red Cross staff conduct the procedure while you relax, watch TV or read. The entire process takes about two hours.

                                          Who Can Donate?
You can continue to give whole blood in addition to platelets. The same good health requirements for a whole blood donor apply to platelet donors.

And, just like whole blood donation, donating platelets is safe. In accordance with our commitment to insure the highest level of safety, all needles and containers are sterile, used only once, and then carefully discarded.

How Often Can I Donate Platelets?
Because platelets are quickly replenished by your body, you can donate platelets as frequently as every 48 hours, but no more than 24 times a year. Additional restrictions vary, however, depending on the donation center, type of procedure used, and your donation history

How Do I Get Started Donating Platelets?
Simply call 1-800-GIVELIFE to schedule a platelet apheresis donation. A Red Cross representative will help you schedule a convenient donation appointment. On behalf of the patients whose lives you will save, we thank you.

Marberthenad: How ironic. I started my business career by providing platelets to Oak Ridge Naational labs and several other hospitals. We did it manuallly 43 yeaars ago. Now they are automated devices that do it much more effectively.

I stayed with the company until my retirement two year ago. I worked with them for 43 years and retired as director of operations.

Your description was very good and this a huge business with most blood banks.

I've been a pretty regular blood donor over the past 20 years or so and only recently learned about apheresis. I donated platelets for the first time a few weeks ago and it was a good, positive experience. You get to watch a video for the 1 1/2 to 2 hours it takes to go through the apheresis, and I was treated so well and with appreciation by all involved.

I've been blessed with excellent health and I'm also an RN who works on a combination medical-surgical/oncology unit of a hospital and often have had to transfuse platelets to patients, so I'm thankful I can help people in this way and recommend it along with marberthenad.

After six months of chemo and literal hell, she was told by her oncologist that she was cancer free. Still has to have six months check ups with MRI's.

No doubt that the event had a major impact on the entire family.

                                                            Sundancer,
You have utterly how glad I am to know that. You have all been in my thoughts for quite some time.
Sorry I missed you on your swing through Athens. As soon as my mother's estate is finally finished (and more has been done lately), I'll have the telephone reconnected. Getting in touch with me is impossible right now, except by seeing me around or through e-mail.
