Pay up Baltimore Sat, 07/31/10 2:31 PM (permalink)
For a long time I liked a guy name Jim Gentile who was a minor league 1st Baseman belonging to the Brooklyn Dodgers------they had the immortal Gil Hodges at 1st and Gentile stayed at Montreal.

Fast forward to 1961-----Jim had been traded to Baltimore----
I followed him closely---listened on the radio on the day he hit 2 Grand Slams in one game.
Way to go Jimmy boy !

He ended the year with one RBI less than Roger Maris ----but just this week they discovered a mistake----Maris was credited with 2 that he should not have received----Gentile won the RBI title for 1961 in 2010-----142-141.

There was a $5000 bonus riding on the RBI title and the Orioles now owe Jim $5000, so get it up Baltimore----no excuses, no crying in your beer---get it up.

CTF-----------I guess you would know.  Hanging out in the same state you get to know the local varmints.  Could be worth $5000 just for the publicity.  Maybe you could start something up and make yourself famous.

Even give away some of those 12" dogs on 6" rolls.

It really wasn't a bonus riding on it, here is what Jim said it was:

"Gentile had to laugh Wednesday. He had nearly been written off as a career minor leaguer back then. He barely made the Orioles in 1960, and in 1961 he made just $15,000 while piling up all those RBIs.

After that, he negotiated a new deal with Baltimore general manager Lee MacPhail, doubling his salary to $30,000.

"We argued over the contract," Gentile said. "I remember MacPhail, at the time I signed the contract, said that if I had led the league in RBIs, it would have been worth $5,000 more."

Lee's son, Andy McPhail, is now the Orioles GM

Wow. Jim Gentile was my favorite player for a couple years. So he really was the RBI champs . Cool.

you boys like to fallow a rookie?.............. look at this kid  Buster Posey  for the San Francisco Giants he just finished a  21-game hitting streak. The kid reminds me of a Mickey Mantle type and his swing is reminiscent of Joe DiMaggio ....this kid is real
and what about that name "Buster"....is that ball players name or what?

All I know is that when we were in Ballmer last week for the Twins series, there was an Oriole whose jersey would make a great gift for Buffetbuster for one, but I don't think he's become distinguished enough yet:

Actually Mr Pie has an accento over the i and his name is pronounced pee-ay, the spanish word for leg. However, I do believe we ought to all chip in and buy BB the jersey as a present. I hope this does not come across as too snarky and academic.
