Peanut Butter warning!

If you have jars of Peter Pan or Great Value (think that is from Wal-Mart) check the jars out!

Glad I saw this. I'm sure ours is okay as no one has been sick and it's been 2 days at least. Felt a little sick when I noticed the 2111 on top of my jar. I threw it away just to be extra safe.

Just ducky!! My girlfriend called me this morning and told me she took the jar out and it had the "2111" on the lid. I know I had almost gotten to the bottom of that jar already. I should take it to Taco Bell with a bunch of contaminated spinach so and have 'em whip up a "special" burrito for me. Yum.

I saw where the "bad peanuts" came from. According to the article, they were processed in Sylvester, GA, which is about 90 miles from my area. That is bad news for this small town farming community and my area in general. I do hope they DO track the outbreak to the actual processing plant. My entire tri-state area (Georgia, Alabama, & Florida) within 100 miles any way of where I live produces most all of the Spanish Peanuts used to make peanut butter in the United States. This may produce a devistating blow to the area's agricultural economy.

    Babe,
You should've taken it back to the supermarket! They'd have given you another jar if yours was full or pro-rated the price of a replacement if it was partly empty.
Gee, if it was opened, I hope nobody gets sick from it!

    Billyboy,
Not to worry too severely... if it was one of the contaminated ones, you'd know it by now.
If you never post again, I guess we'll know why.

    Adjudicator,
Boy, am I sympathetic! Apparently it is rather obvious that a jar is bad because it has an off-flavor... a wee nibble of it is all it takes to know, and that much... if you rinse your mouth immediately... oughtn't do you any harm.
It doesn't seem to me that this will affect the economy of wondrous Worth County (Sylvester is the seat thereof, for those of you who are unknowing!) beyond a wee ripple for a few weeks. I plan to keep buying peanut butter, although I'm not affected because I never buy the brands involved.
S'pose we should we take this up with (Georgia Governor) Sonny Perdue?

    Dearfolk,
My bad! I said there was an off-flavor... well, the CDC (U. S. Communicable Disease Center) says there isn't one!
The library janitor just stopped and looked over my shoulder to read what I was posting, and inserted a really portentious comment: "Snakes love peanuts, and they get in a batch of 'em and this happens. You can't housebreak a snake."
That's exactly what probably happened, although I would think that the bacterium responsible would be eradicated in the peanut parching process after harvesting. Can anyone answer this quandry?
This very thing is why I gave up eating raw peanuts!

Hey: Did you ever connect with Tom?

    http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=18575

He is an old friend of mine from Bainbridge who is now connected with UGA, probably in the library (as that was his forte when @ Bainbridge College when down in my area) (?)

    Adjudicator,
That means that the Rockers will come to the fore!! Zowie!! Where's all my old mono Rolling Stones albums? (I've got 10 or 12.)
And if such as Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich and Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders were favorites of the Mods, who were other faves of the Rockers? The Animals?? The Yardbirds???
Where does Georgie Fame & His Blue Flames fit into this jigsaw puzzle? Manfred Mann?? Zoot Money's Big Roll Band??? The Herd???? Ian & The Zodiacs????? The Sorrows??????
Gee, I sure am glad that neither The Peanut Butter Conspiracy nor The Strawberry Alarm Clock were invented -- much less known in England -- at this time....

Most peanut varieties are pretty susceptible to quick spoilage if not handled properly and quickly, according to my b-i-l , a plant pathologist at Virginia TEch. It really isn't all that unusual to see a lot of victims of salmonella and other baddies through peanut butter, especially the "Natural" brands. We had several cases monthly at the ER/Trauma center, usually from poor shelf storage at home.(Put it in the fridge , folks and make it a rule of thumb to throw away after about a month.)

But despite it's fragility.......ya gotta love the stuff

This so frightened me. I had just bought two jars of Peter Pan on Saturday, and my son had already had some out of one of the jars! Plus, the possible contamination goes back to May 2006; I have no idea how much Peter Pan PB we may have "et" between now and then.

Anyway, both jars were tossed out, the lids saved for mailing to Con Agra. I hope that they find the source of the contamination, but also hope that it doesn't ruin the Peter Pan brand. I like it, although I switch around between it, Jif and Skippy, depending on what is on sale.

I read an article that said rodents can infect the peanuts in storage(snakes, mice, etc) but the roasting process is hot enough to kill salmonella and again during the processing of the peanut butter the temperature is higher than 165 deg. which would also kill the salmonella.

They seem to be focusing on the processing within the plant on not on the peanuts as the source.
