Peg Leg Pete's Pensacola Beach FL - Sat, 06/21/08 4:21 AM ( #1 )
THANX Al-The Mayor! For the writeup. I lived in P'cola for 16 years and Peg Leg's was one of my regular haunts. The Original building must have been blown away in a recent Hurricane because the current pictures are a totally different place from the original place. The old place was a dump anyway, but it had the charm of stale beer smell imbedded in the floor, walls etc. Glad to hear the food and service hasn't changed though. That's good! It's what a great beach bar should be!

I've been to P'cola many times but never to Peg Leg's. Looks like a cool place to hang out on a hot day!

I have been to Peg Leg Petes several times and each time, it was super. I enjoyed their oysters, fish and shrimp. I never had a bad meal there. It was always fresh and hot.

Thanks guys. Peg Leg's was recommended by Sundancer and by I Q Diva, two Roadfooders who have never steered me wrong with places to eat. We stopped there on our way to the Meet n Eat in Mobile last winter. The review took a while to get posted, but I am pleased to have added it to the Gulf-Shore list of good places to eat.

Those oysters look as if they haven't been cooked yet.

On the other hand, the baked ones, and the oyster-shrimp plate look fine.

Michael
As usual you are very perceptive. You are correct, the Oysters in the Photo were indeed Raw, or as the Natives refer to them...'Naked'! I have learned to appreciate them served that way, especially when I know the Oysters have come from a local source and are very fresh and briney! Janet enjoyed the cheesey baked version and we shared the breaded and deep-fried examples...but the Raw were MINE! I love them dearly.

While I love raw clams, for some reason I have never been able to get raw oysters down. I've tried for years, but every time I've attempted to eat one it gets about halfway down my gullet and then pops right back up. Love them cooked -- fried, baked, roasted, etc., but I just cannot eat them raw.
