Pennsylvania to Cape Cod, and then Newport, RI Fri, 10/2/09 10:54 PM (permalink)
I will be leaving from Northeast PA for Cape Cod sometime this month.  I will probably take the northern route (I-84 to I-90 to I-495) to Cape Cod, and then the southern route (I-195 to rt 24 & rt 114 into Newport), then back home on I-95 to I-84.

It's not that I need of ideas for the Cape itself, as we have been there before (although please feel free to make suggestions!) as much as on the trip both ways.

Yes, I did a search and I got a few ideas, but many of the earlier discussions won't apply directly to me.  Abbott's in Noank CT will probably be closed by the time I get there, and we are NOT traveling with kids (two adults in their 50s).  We both love seafood, but we have no need to limit ourselves to that.

Any and all suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.

Abbotts being closed is a good thing. Try and plan a breakfast at Kitchen Little in Mystic. Its worth staying over night just to do that.

One of my favorites on the Cape is the Silver Lounge in North Falmouth. Enjoythe Cape...great time of year to visit there.

I will second the silver lounge!  Aslo Paul's Pizza in Falmouth for any pizza, but the Linguica Pizza is a delight!  As is a linguica sandwhich!  On the way up I-84 in CT, try the Diner at exit 10 beyond Danbury in Sandy Hook, CT.  Called the Blue Colony.  Mega-diner menu but the specials are usually outta sight and the desserts fabulous!  Add to that 24 hrs, a liquor license, and easy on/off and a gas station next door if you wnaa see how exhorbitant CT is in taxing gas!

The Red Parrot on Thames street is a favorite of my wife and I(and now our kids) when we visit Newport. It's got atmosphere and a nice mix of food from Mexican to American.....fun place!!!!

Buskers Pub in Newport had some of the tastiest buffalo wings I've had. Nice place for a snack and a pint.

Scales and Shells for simple fresh seafood is our favorite.  Didn't care for Red Parrot- so so food and service and noisy.  Coffee Grinder on Bannister's Wharf in the morning.  Yesterdays has the best beer list in Newport and decent food.  Haven't been there but heard good things about Salvation Cafe.  Had an excellent lunch at Clarke Cooke House also on Bannister Wharf.

I lived in Newport RI for almost 3 years and was the US Navy night shore patrol officer in charge for 5 months back in 1970 and as a consequence probably put foot in every restaurant, bar and dive in town including the clandestine back alley after hours places few knew about. I was also there during America's Cup. In perusing dining guides for Newport the only place I recognize is Salas's and in reading the reviews it isn't same Salas's I remember.

I haven't been there in over 6 years, but after speaking with some local folks, they say it's still the same ol' Salas'. The restaurant hasn't changed, just the pretentiousness of those that are visiting. They're expecting something either trendy and "bistroish" a'la Scales and Shells or corporate a'la Legal Seafood, neither of which Salas' delivers.
