Phillipe's raises their prices 400% and makes the news.

Not quite Breaking News but all morning the news blurbs kept telling us the news at 11AM would be about Phillipe's raising their price 400%.
Just finished watching the news story and it's true.
For years a cup of coffee at Phillipe's was just 9¢. It was the best deal in town.
February 2 the price goes up to 45¢.
Still a bargain!
Sure didn't see it on the news when they raised the sandwich prices.
What great advertising!

I ran an add in the Frederick News Post a few years back that said " This Month only, Get any sandwich or platter, get a second one at full price"
You cannot believe how many people came in to eat, mentioning they came for the special price, but there was a misprint in their paper! True!

You couldn't get away with that in Los Angeles... anymore. It's like a Going out of Business sign that shows up every few months.

In this, the Starbucks era, a 45 cent cup-o-joe seems a better bargain that the 9 cent cup did in the era when they instituted it.

I haven't seen it recently, but we used to have some places who would put up a large sign saying, "Going out for business!" every once in a while.
