Pig Out in NYC

http://events.nytimes.com/2006/06/28/dining/reviews/28unde.html Who would have thought sophisticated New York would play host to such goings on? A bunch of folks sittin' down at a table and being presented with a whole or half pig to just grab onto and rip away at. Of course they give them plastic gloves and aprons to minimize the mess. Anybody know of anything like this offered elsewhere? Kinda sounds like fun given the right situation.

Daisy May also has a street cart on Wall Street just east of Broad about a stones throw from the NYSE. I might get a bowl of Texas red or a pulled pork sandwich today.

I was just at Daisy May's last week. They have seating inside now. I was very impressed with the rib platter I chose. I got the Kansas City Sweet and Sticky Pork Ribs. It comes with two sides so I got the Baked Beans with Burnt Ends and Rustic Creamy Corn with New York State Cheddar. On to the review: the ribs were REALLY good! Intense smoke flavor, meaty, good crust, and a lot of sauce that had caramelized in the smoker. Now normally, I'm suspicious of any BBQ place that uses a heavy hand with the sauce. What are they trying to hide? But it really worked for these. Plus there were seven meaty ribs in there, so they didn't skimp. The corn was tasty, creamy with some red/green peppers in it and good cheddar flavor. The beans fell somewhat short though. It was a mix and red and black beans with good smoke flavor, but no burnt ends to be found it them. The whole deal was $13.50. I would definitely return. I've heard good things about their beer-can chicken. I also live near one of their BBQ carts in Manhattan. The Bowl-O-Red Texas Chili is very good. Intense sirloin chunk chili (no beans, ground beef, or spaghetti here). I'm not crazy about the BBQ sanwiches though. There is a lot of sauce on them and it doesn't work for me. They have a just from the refrigerated case "Lloyds" feel to them. Definitely stop at the restaurant, get the ribs and grab a fistful of napkins, you'll need 'em!

I used to eat at Daisy May's all the time, before the new dining area. I wish I was their for their expansion. Their Memphis dry rub is perpared well, too. They have enough room by the waterfront for real smoking. I agree about the sides. I loved the creamed sinach. The sweet tea is a bit minty, from what I remember. There was always some unique twist to every item. I thought these culinary touches enhanced rather than foul up a good thing.
