Pittsburgh Eat and Greet: Max's Allegheny Tavern, May 20
Mon, 05/9/11 11:49 PM
( permalink)
buffetbuster and I have agreed that it's time to have another gathering of Roadfooders around Pittsburgh. And now it's time to reveal our cunning plan to the world: We're gathering at Max's Allegheny Tavern at 7pm on Friday, May 20. (Okay, it's probably not as cunning as the plan that killed Osama bin Laden. But it's cunning enough for our needs.) Max's Allegheny Tavern traces its roots back to 1884, though it's changed hands several times along the way. We like the German food and the gracious setting. (The bar area with the mechanical band is not so gracious.) Please let us know if you can join us with a post to this forum or a note to me or buffetbuster. We hope to see you then!

Cunningly done Ralph! Located on Pittsburgh's North Side, just a few blocks from Allegheny General Hospital, Max's Allegheny Tavern has hosted several birthdays in my family over the years. I can recommend the good food, fun atmosphere and they have long been known to have the coolest men's room in the city! And how can you not love a place that offers six kinds of schnitzels? Even though the turnouts in the past have been small, we have always had lots of fun on these Roadfood get togethers. We would love to see GeoNit, KennyJoe, lleechef and any other Roadfooders in the Pittsburgh area join us. Max's Allegheny Tavern 537 Suisman Street Pittsburgh, PA 412-231-1899

Oh, and I should mention that Max's also have plenty of other non-German options on the menu, too.

Count me in! If this is the same place that used to be Max and Erma's, I was there many years ago. Can I see the men's room???

It was indeed Max and Erma's at one time; it changed after a dispute with the Max and Erma's chain. I'm willing to keep watch while you scout out the men's room. I'm not sure that I agree that it's the coolest men's room in the city, though; compare, for example, the men's room at Jerome Bettis Grille, which was one of the ten finalists in 2008's "America's Best Restroom" contest. Ralph is right that the men's room at Jerome Bettis Grill 36 is even cooler. But, in the old days, if you needed to make a call, you better be a man, because the pay phone was in the men's room. No idea what happened if a lady needed to make a call. Glad to hear that lleechef will be joining us that night!

I should be able to make it, but I will be by myself because Susan will be away in Phoenix. The last time we went to Max's the service was atrocious. I trust that was a deviation and a good time will be had by all on the 20th. Ralph - I think the dispute between Max & Erma's (the Pittsburgh tavern) and Max & Erma's (the Columbus chain) was relatively cordial. When the latter decided to move into Pittsburgh, it understood there would be a problem and wrote the current Max's a big check when it agreed to change its name.

Kenny Joe- Good to hear from you and glad that you will most likely be there, although that is too bad that Susan can't make it.

GeoNit- Consider your seat reserved and it is good to hear from you. If you didn't respond by the weekend, I was going to send you a private message. I have never been in the downstairs rathskeller. Sounds like we should look into this. Any other western Pennsylvanians out there?

Thought I should mention that the Pirates are home tonight, as Max's is a short distance away from PNC Park. I am going to give myself a couple of extra minutes for the drive into town. Ann & Paul- Sure do wish you two were closer so you could join us tonight, too!

I believe Ralph will be doing a full report on the food, but in the meantime, here is a group shot. From left to right: Kenny Joe, Lori (icecreamchick), Ralph Melton, buffetbuster, Mariton, Lisa (lleechef) and George (GeoNit). I really had a good time last night. It was great to see some long Roadfood friends!
