Hey there bb,
On our recent trip to your town I was determined to try one of these renowned sandwiches. I thought I was in luck as one of our demos was actually scheduled to take place at Wholey's. I figured I'd grab a sandwich and take a few minutes break to wolf it down.
Unfortunately that darned waiting line never went sufficiently down to the point where I thought I could spare the time away from my demo table. At the very end of the day the line had died down just enough that, although I couldn't wait for a fish sandwich, I could grab a couple of cups of their excellent lobster bisque and clam chowder.
The next day we were working at a couple of McGinnis Sisters stores. As we pulled up in front of the Monroeville store there was a sign, a wooden cut out of a giant fish, proclaiming that today was Fish Fry Day. After getting Dad set up at his demo and before I left for my store up in Mars, I stopped at the counter and ordered a Fish Sandwich.
I'm no expert on these things, having only had one Pittsburgh Fish Sandwich in my life, but I gotta tell ya, this was one fine sandwich. Nice crisp crust on a light flaky filet that overhung the large bun on both sides by a good inch and a half.
The only thing I wished was better was the tartar sauce. All they had available were the little tinfoil packets (Heinz, 'natch). Too bad they don't take the time to make their own tartar sauce to properly compliment this excellent piece of fish.
I'll try to make the time for Wholey's next time we're passing through.
