My Dad said decades ago-  "That ain't no pizza.  It's a cassarole that's a pizza wanna-be. And it missed."

It is surprising how many members of Roadfood -- a site dedicated to celebrating regional differences in eats -- are utterly intolerant of regional differences in eats.

I wonder how Jon Stewart feels about Maruca's Pizza Rustica, presented here by our very own CCinNJ.

LOL!  You can direct that at my Dad. (I actually like Chicago style when it's done well.)   He is notoriously picky and opinionated in his eating habits.  He is notoriously opinionated in just about anything, in fact.  He makes our own Mr. Hoffman look like a hugable squeezable little teddy bear.

Fellow old timers maybe you can jog my memory.  I know pizza was a Polish invention but was it thick or thin, Gary or Cleveland, and most important of all, did it come with catsup/ketchup on it or did you have to put your own on?

I'm not sure if we ever came to any conclusion if you could put ketchup on a hotdog pizza.

I am very huggable. I don't take well, though, to being squeezed.

Come now, TJ, who is intolerant of regional differences? Why, I, myself, am among the most tolerant. For instance, I love Cincinnati chili. I just realize that it isn't actually chili. When it comes to the so-called deep dish stuff that is blamed on Chicago I have nothing against it at all. I'm just glad that it is in Chicago, a city so broad-shouldered and vibrant that it can easily handle the fact that the world dismisses its claim to being a Mecca for apizza.

Chicago, New York, Milwaukee, Gary --- It's all garbage! You'll only find authentic pizza in Naples. And don't be a Neanderthal, use a knife & fork for crying out loud. (Smiley face with tongue stuck out --- ergo, Miley Face)

Heck, everyone knows that Neapolitans traveled to New Haven to learn how to make apizza.

What does ice cream have to do with apizza?
And why does spell check want me to put a space between the a and the p?

Spell check is an ass. Now, with regard to your perfectly reasonable question about ice cream and apizza, it has always been known that the perfect thing to follow a wonderful apizza (although not a clam pie) is a serving of some sort of Italian ice cream. In many areas spumoni gets the nod, but in Naples and New Haven, for reasons of heritage and pride, Neapolitan is the choice of the cognoscenti.

Can we agree that anything called "NY Style Pizza" served anywhere other than New York City will be disappointing and probabably atrocious?

I know of at least one good source of good NYC style pizza in the greater Cincinnati area, and another in Dayton.

There may be others I am unaware of at this point

TJ - That seems to be all they sell in Raleigh and after trying their version I decided that Domino's deserved a 2nd chance. I still don't know why anyone would mix vomit in their pizza sauce.

Had a very good deep-dish pizza in Chicago at Pizzeria Due last week.  It looked much better that the one in the picture above.  I loved the crust, which must have corn meal in it.

I've seen cornmeal used to dust the pan or stone on thin crust pizzas, but never in a deep dish pan. Usually they just oil the sweet holy bejeessez out of the pan.  So... cornmeal in the crust?  Kinda begs for chili in the sauce.

Can we agree that anything called "NY Style Pizza" served anywhere other than New York City will be disappointing and probabably atrocious?

No.  I'll grant you that many of them are likely to disappoint, but I'm aware of two places in the Atlanta area that are owned by New Yorkers (Baby Tommy's, whose owner is from Brooklyn and, especially, LaBella's, which is crewed entirely by a family from Long Island).  I just don't get why a pizza made by Long Islanders using the same ingredients that they used on Long Island is going to be worse when it's made in Georgia.  Barometric pressure, I imagine?

Similarly, I once had an argument with somebody about how the owner of Roy's Cheesesteaks in Smyrna GA couldn't possibly be making a good philly.  Roy uses the "right" bread (Amoroso's), offers them wit' wiz, and grew up in Cherry Hill.  I declined to continue the debate when informed that Cherry Hill was not actually Philadelphia, as that settled it for the other fellow.  Sheesh!

I mail-order my wife a three pack of Lou Malnatti cheese pizzas every year for her birthday.  We've never been disappointed, though if we ever make it in a solid metal pan instead of the throw-away aluminum pan it might be even better.

I'm sure people from St Louis naysay New Haven pizza, and folks from Old Forge gainsay New York pizza, etc, etc.

If one likes what ever style they like, good for them. Soooo much pizza hated.  Darth Sidious rejoices.

I don't care what you call it, where it's from or (for the most part) what it consists of, if you make good pizza, I'll love it.
