Honestly, I consider pizza a
food group.
Think about it:
If you look at it from the former "4 food groups" guidelines, it has your
dairy, your
meat, your
veggies (if you order it with jalapenos as I do), and your
bread.
If you look at it from the "Zone" angle, it's got your
protein, your
carbs, and your
fat. Plus, it has lots of lycopene due to the cooked tomatoes.
Just remember to always order the
thin, crispy crust (to cut down on carb content, and because Chicago-style
deep-dish is a travesty.)
There's a new locally-owned pizza place in Round Rock,
Rockin' Tomato, where I often go for lunch. They offer a buffet with many yummy pizzas, some of their other Italian dishes, and a really great salad bar. All including drink (I go for their fresh-brewed iced tea) for $7. You can get a REAL thin-crust pizza here, and I'm grateful for that.
I eat "
apizza" once every 1 or 2 weeks, on average.
Shalom to y'all.
