Plans Canceled

I'd planned a stop at today's restaurant, Joe & Aggie's Cafe, for the green chile enchilada and the huevos rancheros next month. Unfortunately, my road trip isn't going to happen. There were lots of other Roadfood stops planned from the East Coast all the way west, too.

Thanks. I'm OK. My health had nothing to do with not being able to make the trip.

Thought you might have been in error on the statute of limitations

Nope. Besides, I was a juvenile. Come to think of it, I was really young at the time -- between 4 and 12. I was 4 when I was introduced to the great pleasures of stolen field corn eaten right off the stalk.

I need a passport these days to leave Arizona? I didn't think Obama would take it that far.

No, Michael, I think he means that it has now gotten to the point that anyone from the U.S. (or anywhere else) has to have a passport to get in to Arizona, though why anyone might want to go there right now is beyond me!  It has been so long ago that I don't know if I could still find my birth certificate to prove that I was born, and not hatched!

I hope, and trust, he didn't mean such a really silly thing. Arizona is a great American state. It is filled with people who have done, and do, amazingly wonderful things for our country. It is a state from which heroes come and make us all proud to be Americans.

As you so often do, I was speaking with tongue in cheek. It is an amazing, beautiful and wonderful state. People who don't live here don't understand everything that's going on out here. There are fiercely loyal Americans here trying to preserve the values that make this a great state.

the truth be known Michael's ride ....his 1931 Willys Whippet failed (for the 6th time) the Ohio Smog Test and he was forced to   remove this vehicle from the state highways ............... Last year Michael's road trip was also canceled because his Whippet failed to meet the mandatory 35 MPH minimum Intestate speed-limit. ....The good news is that the Waffle House restaurants wants to buy his car to promote their new sales slogan "Eat here and we will give you the Willys"

Well, I was thinking about Santa Paula, Pismo Beach/Oceano and Coalinga. I lived in Santa Paula and Coalinga back before California became a state, and I once had great broccoli soup in Oceano, and green chil enchiladas in Pismo Beach.

Oh, and I was hoping to get a chance at one of those lamb things at that Phillipe place.

That would have been nice. I was really looking forward to the trip, and to the return drive, which would have taken me to Scottsdale to visit with my daughter and her kids, and to El Paso to see my grandson.

Santa Paula is an interesting little town. For years I lived in Valencia and kept my boat in Ventura, so Santa Paula was the natural stop for Mexican food on the way back and forth every week. And for "family fine dining", we stopped at Familia Diaz. Eventually, I wound up spending a lot of time in Ojai and Santa Paula was the end of the "back road" I used to shortcut the trip. And of course, the Santa Paula Airport was the place that a lot of pilots liked to take day trips to, so I was lucky enough to "fly in" a few times with friends who were pilots. Also a good place to keep them------a friend of mine had a stunt plane there for years. Never did go up in that though--and not sure I would have felt very good after if I had!

I got to Santa Paula with a drilling crew after finishing a job near Coalinga. They called Santa Paula the lemon capital of the World back then. I ended up on the police force there, and it was in Santa Paula that I saw, and ate, my first ever chili dog.

I used to go up to Ojai a lot, to the Ojai Valley Inn, to drink. It was out of town, and as a cop it was better to stay out of bars where I worked.

The last time I drove through the area there were still a lot of lemon groves and the Sunkist packing plant is still just a few miles further at the Ventura border. Ojai Valley Inn is still around although these day's it's primarily a health spa. The Hub was always where I went for drinks---------it fit the neighborhood dive bar description to a T. The only thing lit well enough to see in there was the pool table. They did, however pour a good drink.
