First, I'm assuming you a member of our great USA military, Thanks for your service. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!! Now to that 55 gallon drum grilling machine you wish to build. A few thoughts. What, if any, previous contents did it contain? Would those contents create a problem for your project? If flammable contents were in it, this is a BIG problem for construction. You're gonna be doing some cutting on the big can and a spark could set off an explosion that could ruin anybody's party! Assuming the construction is completed without incident, does previous contents pose a threat to your food during cooking, such as poisoning or something lesser such as the finished product tasting "funny". Good heavy gage metal is important. You're gonna need a grate of metal heavy enough to withstand the high heat of supporting burning charcoal, assuming that is your heat method. Also, you'll need above the grate a "cooking rack" where you place food items. Controllable(the ability, to increase or decrease the level of heat). This is also important regarding "smoking" food. Remember, fire needs three things to survive, fuel, oxygen and heat. I would recommend three controllabe vents, each capable for you to control their function. One at each end of the bottom half of the barrel, another at the top half located on either end of the barrel. Legs, hinges and a handle would be nice. You are a Marine, bet you figure all that out!
